Does anyone know of a good lash cap supplier here in the UK? I use quite a few 7mm and 8mm and our current supplier has become very unreliable.

If you don't know what one is you're unlikely to be of any use, but for your education:

In his fingers is a lash cap, used for setting valve clearances (cap which sets lash = lashcap).

Is this cost cutting? It's cheaper to make a little 'lash cap' than treat the valve stem, 'properly'?

It's weight saving. Lighter valve train, more control, less valve bounce, less wear & tear. Used in bike engines a lot.
They can also get you out of the st if you've run out of the original style valve shim range.
