Evening,

The car is a 1993 Merc sl with a 3litre m103 engine.

Car wouldn't start, it would spin and cough but not fire. It ran last week but took a while to start

Rotor arm and cap look in good condition they are about 4000 miles old, quick rub with paper to clean up.

Still nothing

Removed and cleaned the plugs, the threads were dirty and the electrodes were black.

Cleaned up the plugs, put them back in and it started second go and ran fine.

What is the likely candidate for the rich running ?

Thanks
Del

Usage

Some short some long journeys, it is not an everyday car.

Mot tester said rich, I was assuming black dirty plugs was rich ?

Air filter looks clean, but they are cheap to replace - will get another.

I have spoken to a man who knows about these things.

Chairman of the owners club who has owned lots of these engines.

They are very sensitive to plugs, cap and rotor arm - he suggested he only sees a year out of a Bosch one.

He also recommended changing the temp sensor at the back of the engine, and valve stem oil seals may need doing.

Will see how we get on.

Fixed !

It was running rich - very rich.

Mechanic has suggested that the fuel injection system had been over fueling for years, which resulted in too much fuel entering the exhaust and damaging the cat.

Due to blocked cat the engine was unable to draw in a decent air fuel mix. The fuel was dribbling into the bottom of the intake manifold.

He drilled a couple of holes in the down pipe prior to the cat, and it started - sounded like a touring car, but ran well.

Full exhaust system required.

We were placing bets on merc pricing, but they have no parts left !!

Will try eBay / breakers.
