VW polo 2010 DSG TCM issue

So the blinking DSG Transmission Control Unit on my polo has popped it. I was 25 miles from home and lost all power on a local road. Had to get the car towed. Luckily I wasn’t with my kids as that would have been a disaster.
Called VW specialist who quoted me 2000k to repair. Ouch!
Another local dealer has quoted me a fraction of that but not sure if I should take it to local person given that this is a pretty important component of the car. The other consideration is that I have kids and if the car loses power whilst I’m droving again and have kids in the back, that’s rather dangerous!!
Anyone else who has experienced this issue, can you let me know if you managed to get the work repaired without the hefty price and whether vw were willing to contribute?
I know there was a recall back in 2013 in some countries but nothing in the Uk but planning to give them a buzz anyway to see if they will help. I don’t have main dealer service history though. There’s 50k mileage in the clock.
