not been on here for a long time but here I am and I need some advice on my 1.3 Multijet Grande Punto 90bhp version, 2006.

I recently bought it, it cost hardly anything as it wasnt running right, part of my reason to buy was to learn about diesel engines, for the last 10 years or so I have been a Rover K series guy.

anyway

I found that the vac tubes that control the VGT actuator were shot, so I replaced them and it was much, much better.

the actuator works, when engine is started it pulls on the VGT mechanism [which is free], I assume that under load vac is released by the turbo boost controller/solenoid and the actuator "lets go" which adjusts the vanes position to allow more boost.

problem. in first gear, its not boosting until over 3000rpm, but in other gears it will boost from about 2000

I can hear whistling from turbo

it has manual gears, is there a sensor that knows when its in gear? how does the engine know to boost from 2000 in other gears other than first?

the first rubber hose from turbo outlet is bandaged up for its whole length - no idea if they left the factory like that but it has what looks like the original clips on, theres no obvious leaks but its tricky to tell, I have ordered a new hose to replace this and will fit it when it arrives.

pulling away from rest, needs to be pre-planned somewhat! which potentially could lead to an unsafe move if a gap in traffic appeared and I needed to get going quick

its lovely drive, if it wasnt for a very late boost - please help!!

I don't know if it is likely, but is it possible that boost is limited slightly to reduce torque steer/wheelspin when pulling away?
no, I am old[ish] and sensible, not a boy racer

sorry I did misread your comment

I doubt the ecu could be cutting power in that way, it probably would if there was a setting for it but there isnt

anyway on the way home from work last night, engine was belching smoke out the exhaust [not black], then it went into limp mode and engine light on

so realistically I think I am looking at a new turbo.

awaiting a compatible diagnostic scanner arriving, as my basic one isnt reading any codes even though EML light is on

it could be, the VGT solenoid valve, which I have read about a lot

so just waiting on the diagnostic thing to arrive
