The context is adding a heated windscreen, where none was previously.
If this is the relay to go for, then connector...

30- Positive from the ignition circuit via a switch
85- positive from the battery, via a 20 amp fuse.
86- positive leading to the screen, via a 10 minute timer.
87- Negative from Earth.

Is this right?

And what sort of switch should I go for, bearing in mind there is a timer in the circuit.
A toggle (won't this look on ,after the timer has cut the power?)
A "only on when pushed" (like a starter button)
Or, best, one with a light that comes on when the screen powered (and if so, how the hell does that fit into the wiring?).
If you have any switch suggestions, there are loads here|http://www.vehicle-wiring-products.co.uk/VWPweb2000/switch-1/switch-1.html

Please help, I am getting more confused, the more I think about it!

30 = +12v feed via fuse
87 = window

or vica versa for above 2

85 +12v switched feed
86 -ve ground/earth.

Gotcha. The other way round from what I thought.
30-87 the meaty bit,
85 and 86 the wimpy bit that turns it on.

Thanks.

SOME progress on this subject. I now understand the first relay- I'm learning.
I have now purchased an alledged timer relay for a mondeo front heated windscreen. this one has a pretty picture on it, what does this lot mean?? i am assuming there is an illuminated switch in there somewhere?

it is a bit fuzzy, there is numbers 1-5 to decide where
1 is far right#
2 is far left on same circuit as #1
3 is top middle
4 middle
5 bottom

I have got a dealer mondeo electrical diagram which is a little help but i cant translate it into english (i.e wires and stuff that i would put on another car)

Thanks for the help guys, i just cant get my head around this.

So I could possibly have the wrong relay? If that's the case I can easily swap it, assuming the Ford parts guy can find the right one this time.
The easiest way to go outside to my Mondeo with heated front screen and borrow the relay from that! I will do that tonight

Thanks guys for all the replies (Mike; relays are actually way down on the list of jobs- the gearbox is in my shed and the engine is still in more than one bit at the moment- I am still fixing problems from le mans!)

I still don't get for sure where number 4 goes; is that another earth??
Dilbert, are you saying that the 2 bits between 1 and 2 are the coil and a resistor or is the 2nd bit a timing widget?? The bit at bottom middle is a 5 (that was the best scan /pic I could get after 0.5 hour of trying)

Gearbox leaks, always has but got realy bad recently so I took it to be repaired (now done awaiting re fitting- a problemette with that but something I am sure I can overcome given time).
Ticking was (almost certainly) a rocker worn concave which has also been remidied with a set of refinished rockers and reassembled but not yet tested (becasue I need to put the gearbox back first). www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=205269&f=34&h=0
Once that lot is done I can fit the windscreen; just getting the electrics ready on the dark winter evenings!

I have checked the relays in my Mondeo. Problem is that the handbook map and the actual fuse/relay box layout is not the same
The green one (as scanned) is in there so chances are that is the one, although the light still comes on on the switch if I turn the heated screen on with the green relay removed. The other relays are not as meaty as mostly only have 4 spades on them. BTW In the handbook the heated screen relay is marked as "timer" just dont know for sure which one it is!
