possible diesel turbo failure

Could anyone tell me the best way of telling if a turbo is on it's way out or is just a bit on the noisy side ( if there is such a thing )
Reason I ask, I have a mitsubishi L200 4life 2.5td pickup, and it has a little turbo whine and bang on 3000rpm I can hear a faint high frequency rattle, not that loud, if the radio is on you can't hear it.
But I suspect it's the turbo bearing that is starting to make a noise.
Anyone have experience of diesel turbo failure and does it sound like I'm going to have to cough up for a new turbo ??
And guess what, it's only done 23,000 miles, but due to a service mixup by the former owner ( service was 1500 miles later than required ), mitsubishi will not backup the warranty.
