Pretty sure my alternator has gone in the monaro and I took it off last week to get it changed over.

MF have them for £470 iirc but says that's with the clutch, what is this? Have it cheaper without the clutch.

I'd rather not pay that much and with the part number my local store can get it for £260. They are cheaper from the states but with postage and import charges probably work out the same.

Ideally I want to get my current one reconditioned but not sure if they'll fix the whole thing and not just the bushes. What have you guys done to sort yours? Any help appreciated.

I'll take it to the local place on Saturday to see what they say and exactly what they fix with it. Is the clutch that extra part with a pulley on? Do they break?

Basically the problem with my car is the battery voltage kept going down to 12 and then back to normal and as the days went on it would get more often and slower to start the car. The battery light often came on and so did the check alternator error. Hopefully by changing it it's going to fix the problem.

It wasn't difficult to take off, ended up getting to the bolts from underneath and took it off through the top and taking the fan off the rad so I could squeeze it out. Getting it back in might be a bit more difficult though ha.

I took my alternator down to a local place that fixes them and they can't find anything wrong with it (doesn't help that it was an intermittent fault).

With the other pulley that is next to it what happens when they fail? Would it be worth buying one of them and going from there?

On the 6.0 there's something else attached, think it's called an idler.

I say intimittent but isn't really driveable at all so something needs to be fixed. I did fit a new battery because it was buggered but haven't driven the car since, the voltage was still showing low.

When I pick the alternator up I'll see what they checked because I think it needs replacing

Not sure if it was fully charged because I haven't driven it seen as it's not currently taxed. I left it running and was showing the normal voltage and then dropped down to 12 and a few minutes later jumped back up. That's what it was doing in the last few weeks when I was driving it and was getting more frequent and lower and really struggling to get the power to start so I presumed from that that the alternator had packed in. Oh and the battery light would come on and check alternator.

Ideally I would give it a long drive to see if the battery was the problem but I need to swap my insurance over and tax it to test that so could do with fixing it first.

I might just be on about the clamp thing that came off with it, can't remember now if there was a pulley on, haven't looked at it for a week so my memory must be going lol.

Anyway update, went to collect and been told the pulley on the alternator is slipping and is cracked inside. MF doesn't sell this part separate, anybody know where I can get one from?

Right after a bit of searching I've found one on eBay from the states that I think is the right one. The part number matches and in the list of cars it fits the pontiac gto is listed and also the actual monaro alternator part number.

However the end of it has a different fitting. Take it this is just to tightness it up so as long as the thread is the same it'll be right? Measurement seem to match but I'll double check them.

This is the one for sale (ignore the part number on this bit, the ad for the pulley has the proper numbers on)

And this is mine.

Sorry for the confusing thread, I'm usually half decent with mechanics but monaros aren't the easiest things to deal with.

Edit to say that I've found the genuine part on rockauto so will buy it from there. Slightly more expensive but I'd rather have the genuine parts fitted if possible. No idea what the import charges will be but can't find anywhere in the UK that sells them.

I've just ordered it and there wasn't any mention of import charges so I'll just wait and see. The site prices also didn't include vat so that's good to know for the future.

Let's hope this fixes it!
