Just over 4000 miles on a new LS3 fitted by Monkfish and my check oil light is on again. Zilch oil pressure. Currently stuck at Baldock services awaiting recovery. Am i having a run of bad luck or what? Same symptoms that killed the previous engine...

Plenty of oil, filter changed 3k ago. Only use Mobil one. Drove about 2 hours with friend this morn, stopped for brekkie then warning. Stopped in services immediately and pressure gauge went to zero after restart post-brekkie.

First time was same, 'check oil' light and had to get home by which time engine didn't sound good and there was no pressure showing on gauge. Monkfish confirmed there was no pressure after doing test. Cheapest and quickest way to get running again was new engine, said Roger, which Monkfish fitted.
This time I had a '3' on the pressure gauge whilst engine running when 'check oil' warning showed, pulled into services quickly and after refuelling, started it and zilch on the gauge. Turned it off immediately and just got it recovered to home. Will speak to Roger in morning. Be nice if it was just a sender. Oil level is at top and not too dark as only done 3.5K since oil/filter change. This is getting to be an expensive habit!frown
No fault codes on OBDII to indicate any other issues.

And is the engine an original fitment ? Factory vehicle ?

No modifications that would affect the oil system in general ?
Direct Replacement GM product from Partsworld Performance stock motor other than Magnaflow Cat-Back. Car is completely standard bar exhaust - 2009 VE model.

I had the same issue on my Monaro, but it was just the sender unit. I think it would be impossible for you to have trashed a second engine with similar symptoms.
Let us all know the result, but my money is on something simple like a sender unit (even that would be unusual for a new unit to fail, unless you have reused the sender unit from your original engine)
It might even be the oil pressure gauge at fault.
Have a little faith...not easy these days I know.

best of luck.

First time engine definitely wasn't good. I would love it to be sender unit (or gauge) this time especially after a mere 4.5k on this engine. It would be pretty damn bad luck to have two go as you say. At least should be under warranty if it is oil pump relief valve. I think looking at switch, it's new as the crate engine comes with pretty much everything in comparison to a lot of replacement motors.
I ain't gonna walk out in a thunderstorm though just in case my luck isn't in.
Did 120 miles this morn with no issues, stopped for a bite to eat then after, just up the road a minute or two, the dreaded message. Luckily was just outside Baldock Services so pulled in still showing a good '3' on the gauge then zilch after restart. Switched off and flatbed back home. Pity as was going to St Neots meet after taking in some great roads/tunnels this morning.
Jeez, my old 1974 308 HJ Monaro was more reliable than this...

you drove it again without having checked oil pressure properly ???
Er, No. What made you think that? It was fine prior to breakfast. After breakfast it was fine, just a very short distance from Baldock to Baldock services where I was going to refuel literally three minutes after setting off after breakfast, the warning flashed up - I still had 3kPa at this point. I was in the Services in a matter of seconds. after refuel drove it about three car lengths off of forecourt to tyre air line. Switched it off, restarted very briefly and then it had a zero on the gauge. Turned off immediately and got it trailered home.

@Stevieturbo - Maybe your not reading the post correctly or I'm not wording it clear enough. When I say first time (above) I mean on original engine. This is happening on the replacement now. Exactly the same issue it seems. I did state it's had a new engine, I did also state it was trailered home. Not quite sure where you're coming from re:you drove it again...

This post after your first post sounded like you drove it again.
Ah I see. No worries. Certainly not drivin' it anywhere after losing pressure. The first engine & associated costs taught me thateek
Hopefully it'll be heading up to Monkfish on Thurs if transport confirm tomoz that they can pick it up.
I hate life when the LS3 part of it is missing frown

Monkfish have confirmed that there is no oil pressure. Waiting to see how to move forward on this once they contact Partsworld Performance (who supplied the new LS3) on Monday. I think it's time to find a car that's reliable as this just ain't cutting it. Would love to keep it but have to drive to work and need something that isn't off the road 3 months a year frown

Hopefully if it's a daily driver then 4k miles would be well within a year and some sort of manufactrurer's warranty will apply....
I would hope so, it's only been in the car for two months! It was off the road for a month+ waiting for a new motor, had it back on the road for about two months and looks like it'll be off the road another month again now.

Very possible

Although I thought most crate motors of that type came with sump intact ? if this was changed, pickup pipe changed...there could well be a problem in that area.

And changing parts like that too....could well have a negative effect on any warranty

two identical failures on completely different and standard engines....just seem impossible to blame on the actual engine itself as it really would be beyond unlucky.
I believe engine had sump etc already fitted as Roger seemed to think that would have manifested itself prior to now.
On the original engine, i did 23k trouble-free miles last year before it died. I've been extra cautious with this one, if the oil got too warm, i'd drive it gently until it dropped back down before heading home. It ran a little warmer but that's to be expected i imagine as it'll still be tight. Oil change was done and i was going to do another at 5k just to err on the side of caution but it didn't even get that far!

OP, did the PW engine come with a monaro sump and oil pick tube already fitted? Plug and play? If not then as I suggested above I'd suggest your issues are where components have been shared between both engines. Oil pick up pipe and pick up 'o' misaligned or squidgy seal spring to mind. It happened to me once. I've learnt with hindsight to always fit a new seal on the pick up pipe and align it properly. They only cost 20p and save such a lot of agro.

As far as I can make out from my conversations with Roger; the sump/oil pick-up was already attached. Monkfish did the work and I've faith in them and they are well aware of the 'O' ring issue, the oil pump relief valve and a couple of other issues I'd not previously read about. They wouldn't be approaching PW if it was their error.

Had a very very similar issue recently on my LS3 engined E3.

Turned out to be the oil pressure relief valve stuck open. Its incorporated in the oilpump. Had VX fit a new one (ex Monkfish via Walkies). No damage done thankfully. Lifetime warranty vehicle and engine done 29,000 miles at 4.5 yrs old.
That relief valve issue has affected around 15 variations of GM engines and been going on for years - really needs a solution - I've read of new cars having the issue after just 2k miles in the US.

If the relief valve has stuck, it would be a very simple fix ( engine out though...or at least oil pump removed ) and if you shut if off in time, once fixed you should be good to go.
Well stevieturbo, it seems I was unlucky to have a pump go again. I spoke to Roger earlier today and he has swapped the pump and full pressure has been restored, appears damage-free so hopefully have it back soon after he's completed testing it. Phew, I really struggle without the VXR8 about, was dreading a month without it.

All running sweet. Thanks goes out to Monkfish for sorting that out.
