I believe the standard cv8 item is no longer made?
Is it necessary for ordinary driving in the uk?

I fitted a Mishimoto universal oil cooler to mine as the original one was past it's best and have never had any problems. Standard one was getting hot at track days and steering was as heavy as. Great quality, price is in euros but I got mine from Mishimoto UK.

I would say to have some sort of cooler, even it was a DIY fabbed copper loop or something to replace the steel

To be honest it isn't worth doing just fit a proper cooler and do it right first time. My original one was a bit of copper pipe that had been fitted by someone.
