I'm having a right song and dance changing the spark plugs on my Mazda 6 (a 2006 2.0 petrol (obvs) auto estate). Simple job, right? Wrong.

I purchased some Bosch plugs from EuroCarParts using their reg number look up, and I got sent plugs with a 17.5mm thread. When I took out the old ones, those were NGK ILTR5A-13G with a 25mm thread. So, either the ones supplied to me are the wrong thread length, or the ones previously installed (which must have replaced the original Mazda items at some stage, the car currently has 90k miles on it and I've had it since 65k) were the wrong thread length.

But there's another wrinkle: the NGK ILTR5A-13G are listed as a 17.5mm thread on the Opie Oils website (usually a supplier on the ball), but as 25mm thread on EuroCarParts/CarParts4Less. There's also an NGK ILTR6A-13G on Opie with a 25mm thread length. I suppose Opie have got it wrong? To find out, I called two separate Mazda dealers. They want £90 (!) for a set of 4 plugs, and neither of them could confirm for me which length they are as they don't keep them in stock and it would take a few days to order in. I also called ECP and Opie, neither of them could shed any light and referred me to the manufacturer. Hmm.

What's going on here? Nobody, not even a dealer, seems capable of giving me an answer.

This is driving me round the twist. The old one which came out broke (the ceramic/plastic/whatever top bit broke off), so I now have a car I can't use until I've worked out if I've got the right plugs or not.

I think I'm going to have to assume that the 25mm ones are correct and send back the Bosch ones I've got, as 25mm have been in the car for at least 30k miles without a causing a problem. but still. I'd like to KNOW I've got the right parts installed.

I know a few people on here have had Mazda 6s, any specific experience with spark plugs? I've posted on the Mazda 6 Forum, but it's about as lively in there as a meeting of EU enthusiasts at the Conservative Conference.

SOLVED: have ascertained form the Bosch and NGK websites that I need the long reach. Shame Mazda dealers don't have this information. Have paid £22 for a pack of 4 Bosch, against the £90 the Mazda dealers wanted. Result.

This applies to the Mk1 facelift Mazda 6 2.0 petrol, mid 2005 on.
