Hey guys, looking for some advice and opinions on a problem I'm having with my car.

Mazda 3 2010 Takuya 1.6 50,000 on the clock.

Just before Xmas we were travelling up to Walsall from Southampton, got as far as the end of the M3 cruising around 70 in 5th and it began to jump out of gear.

I could watch the gear stick creep slowly out of 5th position then jump into neutral.

This seemed to occur only at higher speed when I was accelerating upwards of 55mph towards 70.

The issue did not occur in other gears, only 5th.

Headed to the services and got towed home by the AA. Interestingly at lower speed, it did not jump out of 5th.

So took the car to my local mazda dealer who had it all day and couldn't find anything wrong with it. To compound the problem, I live on the Isle of Wight, no motorway here and limited opportunity to put your foot down which will have hampered their testing as we couldn't recreate the driving environment.

Since then I have had no issues with the car which is kind of annoying as I want to replicate the issue to help identify the cause! However I have only been driving around the island, which is mostly shorter journeys, not much prolonged cruising at speed in 5th.

This leads me to believe it may be a heat thing possibly as everything would be getting quite hot on the motorway. AA mechanic suggested maybe a spring that holds the gear in place may be worn and prolonged high-speed driving may make it lose grip of the gear?

Any thoughts on what the issue could be will be greatly appreciated :-).

Also I am quite a novice when it comes to car mechanics so will need it in idiot speak haha.

Many thanks,
Jay

Thanks for the reply Nickp82,

I don't know when it was last drained and replaced. I have had the car for just over a year and I haven't changed it.

Will give that a try.

No I don't rest my hand on there whilst driving, can't vouch for the previous owner though.

I have done a number of long motorway trips in the car before it began happening, annoying really as the car had been flawless until Xmas.
