BS Power figures .....
Discussion
This used to be the curse of the Cosworth Boys, but it seems that Jap metal has fallen into this trap. Some will know I am heavily into tuning MKIV Supras. Everytime I see a car in a Magazine or on Ebay quoting XXX bhp I check the spec. Without fail the spec seems incapable of supporting the BHP. What is the reasoning behind this? Pub bragging rights?

Do you have any examples? It can be hard getting your head round the sort of power a properly sorted Jappa turbo can make. Supra engines are good for 500HP on stock internals, 1500HP fully sorted, an SR20DET (Nissan 2-litre) can make 750HP fully modified, the RB26DETT (GT-R Engine) can go to about 1350-1400 fully modified and will see 500HP without too much trouble at all. If your idea of high specific power is something like the M3 at about 100HP/L, you'd be surprised at what can be achieved.
No I am talking about power figures that are simple unobtainable with the Mods that the car has. Not what the engines are capable of, but what they actually have bolted to them in relation to what the owners claim the bhp the car makes.

I get asked all the time " how much power has that got" When I say 500-600bhp in road trim, they usually say, oh my mates gotta a xxx that is 500bhp on stock turbo/s, yeah right.
I remember having the engine from the Purple car in the back of my Pickup on the way back from the engine dyno, where it made a genuine 690bhp @ 25psi. Guy wanders over to me, says hey mate, how much power does that make. 690bhp says I, oh, hes says, my skyline is 750bhp.....
Sorry it's a pet hate of mine.

Yep couldnt agree more. There really is a need for a hardcore tech Jap mag, but even though J Tuner started with this promise it hasnt really materialised.
I suppose the trouble is once you have covered the basics you start repeating yourself. I used to love CCC for its tech articles, something in that vain would be excellent.

just though I would prove my point...
