Does anyone know of a close ratio competition gearbox (or gear cluster) suitable for a FWD Toyota race appliation please. I currently have a Toyota Carina built to Group N+ regs with an 3SGE engine in it but the CR gearbox that came with the car has shredded synchros and other internal damage. I have fitted a 'box from a Carina GTi for now but would prefer a proper competition CR gear box in the long term if possible.

Thanks

Thanks Ben. Unfortunately mny of the 'boxes use in race Carinas seem to have been sequential vesions as used in the full on Super Tourers. Mine is a Group N+ car that was originaly built for New Zealand and subsequentley raced in the UKs National Saloon Car Cup. It always had an H pattern 'box but there are no markings on either the 'box or the (broken) gear ratios to allow identification for ease of buying direct replacements. A close ratio gear set that fits in the standard Carina E Gti gearbox casing would be ideal but outside of the aforementioned Super Tourers not many people seem to have raced Carina saloons.

Have you tried TRD Japan directly? I would hazard a guess that the 3SGE has been used in all sorts of race and rally cars so maybe Toyota produed a gearbox to match.

Are you sure the gearbox in your car is not the same as another car...Toyota are well known for interchangeability of parts...MR2 gearbox maybe?

If its from this end of the world maybe the internals are from PPG... http://www.ppgearbox.com.au/
Hi. I haven't been able to find a link to TRD in Japan (that's not in japanese), TRD USA don't have anything thats FWD & TRD Australia referred me to my local dealer (who didn't understand anything to do with racing/rallying)!

I didn't know about PPG but a quick browse seems to show that everything they have for toyotas is for RWD cars. I think that the MR2 may use the same gearbox (S54?) but, again, I don't seem to be able to find anything about close ratio, competition, dog engagement or straight cur 'boxes!

Could be worth getting in touch with the previous NZ owner to find out a bit more if you know who raced it down here? I'll try and remember who ran Toyotas in NZ tourers back in the 90s - the Coronas were all 3S-GE + H-gate as far as I know.

The team was run by Bruce Miles & I have been in touch with him & one of his former mechanics. They are trying to drag info from the back of their memories - it was 15+ years ago!

Thanks. I think i tried an e-mail to them via their web site but didn't get a response. Maybe have to ring them direct but its a bit annoying if they have a "contact us" on their web site and then don't respond!

Have found this whilst trawling through the net:
http://www.rallyrallyrally.com/product-news/kaaz-c...

Its a close ratio gear kit described as bing for the 3SGTE engined Celica & MR2 - I have the normaly aspirated 3SGE engine. I wonder if it would be suitable????

Thanks, I already have an LSD in the race car box (which we have transplanted into the Carina GTi 'box). The ratios for this rplacement item are not TOO close, though. Perhaps the power & torque of a turbo engine doesn't require much closer ratios.

Its a lot of money to spend if I don't know tha tit will definately fit & be an improvement over what i have already!!! More thinking required!

I wonder if the original 'box was from a turbo as the ratios that are damaged are thicker items than the ratios in the Carina GTi 'box tht we have now put in? The 'box that came out had helical gears but a straight cut LSD.

I have also found references to "C-One" transmissions/ close ratios for toyota gear boxes - anyone got any experience of them?
