Nissan Upgrade

Hoping some knowledgeable PH'ers on this forum could help out a friend of mine who fancies upgrading his Nissan. Below is his question. Thanks

Nissan 200sx touring. Want to get to either 240bhp or 270bhp.

240bhp conversion done via K&N filter, turbo boost increase to 15psi + cold spark plugs, new Mongoose exhaust. price = £700.00 parts + £235 labour, all inc VAT.

270bhp conversion is as above but with new intercooler that is 6x larger than old one and has potential to get engine up to +400bhp. Turbo boost raised to 17psi. price = £1000.00 parts + £140 labour, all inc VAT.

Question: Can I get to 270bhp with a cheaper intercooler upgrade?? The 6x one seems a bit of an overkill for a 270bhp system.

There are loads of mods you can do to a 200sx. Get on the message boards at www.sxoc.com and ask on there (SX Owners Club - invaluable). The intercooler is that much bigger (6x or whatever) as the standard one is small and hidden in the wing, and I am guessing the replacement he is looking at is a massive front mounted job. You can get biggerfatter wing mounted intercoolers which should be a cheaper option than a frount mounted. You can also decat the front down pipe which leaves the main CAT still in for MOT day. As a warning, there is much debate over using wetoil filters (such as K&N or HKS) as it is thought that the oil can get onto the MAF sensor (air flow sensor) and send the readings out. A lot of folks believe using dry filters is the best option ... I couldn't possibly comment (BETTER SAFE THAN SORRY!!!!)
