How to find the build sheet for a BMW using reg no.
Discussion
To see exactly what's fitted to a particular car you need the Reg No. and VIN.
First go here:
http://www.bmw-warranty.co.uk/Pages/CarDetails.asp...
Enter the reg number of the car and press NEXT, helpfully it will pull up the details of the car including the VIN. Keep that page open.
Go here and enter the VIN:
https://www.bmwvin.com/
The build sheet actually includes standard fit equipment as 'options' but it'll tell you exactly what is on your car and also the build date.
The VIN number trick on the Insured Warranty site doesn't seem to work with some stock already at a BMW dealer but then again they'll have the build sheet anyway and also doesn't seem to work with older cars. It found my '55 plate E65 okay though.
ETA The insured warranty site doesn't give you the VIN of anything pre-2000, from a bit of research with different cars on AT. Obviously if you know the VIN then proceed straight to the BMW owner area site.

what have I done wrong? Definitely the right reg number (am a little OCD with registrations)
I guess that your car is ineligible for the BMW Insured Warranty. Might be age, recorded mileage, etc. If you know the VIN then you don't need to bother with the Insured Warranty site, it's just a workaround to find the VIN online which you need to access the BMW build sheet site.
