Replacement key fob cost....

My wonderful wife managed to separate the electronic fob from the metal blade of my '63 plate 6GC when pulling her key ring out of her handbag, and of course the fob flew straight down a very large/deep drain.
The blade is still connected to her key-ring, and we now need a new fob to be programmed. Called my local dealer parts dept. (who couldn't have been more surly or less helpful), he asked me what car it was, and then quoted me £224.
This is rather a lot, is it not, for what is in effect a little bit of plastic and electronic componentry.
Anyone with any ideas on how I may be able to spare my wife's blushes and secure a more cost-effective solution?
