V8 or straight 6

Looking at X5’s
Seen plenty of well spec’d 35d out there with 80k or more miles that fit my budget, but then again seen a few v8’s that have a great spec and aside from the mpg are slightly cheaper by a couple grand and shout out they are more simplistic eg no turbos just a great big lump of v8ness
So if you were looking at a 2008 or newer would you go down the diesel or petrol route for these....

I do around 12-15k miles a year.
Reason to purchase is because i need to lug a caravan around and our VRS estate doesnt have the weight.
Looking to spend circa £10-15k and get as new as possible but with good mileage and spec (pan roof is a must)
V8's (for obvious reasons) of similar spec to a 35d are in some cases £3k to 5k cheaper.
Im guessing pulling a van around will need torque and a V8 may not be the optimum choice regardless of how nice it sounds
