BMW WARRANTY - ANY GOOD?

Looking at buying a 2nd gen X5, 2008 - 2009 model with approx 60-75,000 miles on it (given my budget).

Having looked at various warranties for peace of mind, has anyone had any experience with BMW warranty? They seem the best on the market (in comparison to RAC, Warranty Wise - whom I understand all try to wriggle out of paying when you ever make a claim)?

Thank you kindly.

Only warranty worth having but you will find that the price goes through the roof if you try to warranty a car with more than 60k. Trick is to put it on before 60k and keep it on monthly payments.
Thank you and noted. What happens when the car goes over 60k miles though (assuming I got the warranty when the car had done under 60k)? Surely BMW will ask what the mileage is when I claim? Am I right by thinking the monthly cost will be a lot cheaper if bought under 60k than over 60k? Sorry I have not bought a warranty before hence these questions.

Last year the bells and whistles bmw warranty for our 5 series was just under £600. It was just under 60k miles.

This year on 72k the same warranty has gone up to £1500 or there about.
Right I see! Well the question is whether it is worth paying over £1000 per annum for the warranty moving forward.

From memory the monthly cost is set when you start the warranty, and remains more or less constant for the duration (plus some adjustment for RPI increases). 60k miles is where BMW decide your warranty should cost you more, which is why it’s better to pay monthly than yearly if you’re approaching that sort of mileage.
You say it is better to pay monthly, than yearly. can you kindly elaborate on this point please? thank you.

It depends what mileage your car has when you start the warranty. If it’s, say, 55k and you do 10k per year, you know you’ll be over 60k in a year’s time.

If you pay yearly you will have to renew, and they will charge more for a car with 60k miles, as in the example of our friend above.

If you pay monthly, the policy doesn’t need renewing - it runs as long as you keep paying, and you pay the same amount each month. This means you have the same payments (let’s say £65/month) as you did when your car had 55k miles, even in a year’s time when you are on 65k...
I am with you now, thank you for clarifying smile

It's a decent warranty and if taken out with under 60k on the clock, good value as well.

And I assume one should choose the 'comprehensive warranty' level (there are three cheaper ones) - for the max cover on the vehicle? The cheaper levels - I ask if there any point as you can almost guarantee that whatever goes wrong won't be covered!

Also when I come to make a claim, do I have to take the car into a BMW dealer to get fixed (and thus pay the extortionate labour costs etc)? Or can a local garage fix the car (cheaper labour etc)?

OP, is this groundhog day?

Just to be clear, Faz50 is most likely referring to the fact that he renews his warranty annually, and they will ask milage every year and adjust the premium accordingly.
If you take out the monthly option (i.e. not annual renewal) there is never a renewal per se so as long as you are below 60,000 miles when you start it, then the premium does not increase due to mileage.

The one thing to consider though, is that if you by an Approved Used Car from BMW then you will get a year's warranty. So in order for the lower cost monthly option to be available to you when you need to take it out, i.e. in a year's time, you need to be below 60,000 miles then, so you should be looking for a car at something like 50,000 miles now.

Something like the below looks like a good car. The only trouble is the mileage is over 60,000. However I think it will be very hard to find one below 60k mark with the extras I want (reverse parking camera, 20" alloys, m sport).

Just bought an 09 plate e91 with 68000 ish miles on.
Has full BMW history.
My quote from bmw for the warranty is £96 a month.
Keep ummming and arrrrring, but has to be worth it for peace of mind for the next 32,000 miles I reckon?!
Very helpful to know this, thank you. I think if I were to buy a 09 plate in an X5 form (with a similar mileage) then I would be looking at approx £158 pcm. I am like you in umming and arrring about whether to do it!
