What would you buy?!

A 2010 3.0 528i fully loaded M Sport (80k Miles) for under £14k trade seller. Options include comfort memory seats, adaptive suspension, adaptive xenons, full rear seat entertainment, rear camera, 19” rims, etc.

Or

A 2012 3.0 530d SE with sensible options (37k Miles) for £15.5k approved used BMW. Options include electric front memory seats, 18” rims, adaptive xenons, professional media, reverse camera, etc.

Average around 11k miles a year, mainly local miles semi urban with the odd long drive. We also tow a caravan.

Thoughts? Less to go wrong with the petrol?

528i every time, smooth as silk which is what a big German 'luxury' saloon is all about.

The 528i is a peach, when pootling around it is so smooth, the power from 800rom through to 1800rpm when it will change gear is just so linear it makes for such a relaxing way to waft, in a way the 530d just can't, I love that about larger NA petrols, especially when you remember there is no vibrations, noise etc. either.

Then when you want to have fun you it completely changes character, it starts to come alive, feel lighter, has a lovely growl and revs through to 7000rpm getting stronger and stronger through the rev range, again something I just don't get with my 530d and something I miss so much.

One thing I will say though, they both seem quite expensive?
I was going to view an 11 plate 528i M-Sport Touring last month, 72k miles, grey with oyster, nav prof, xenons and a few other options and he was asking £9500 for it.
The only reason I didn't was a 535i came up, we agreed £10,250 for that, 78k miles, 61 plate, all the toys. Just that he pulled it from the market as he was let down on his replacement.

Just sounds a lot for an 8 years old 5 series?
Where are you finding them?! Can’t find any with that spec/age/mileage for the money you’re talking about.

I can't either now, see the thread "used cars not selling" in general gassing.

Hence, at the moment I am holding off.

I refuse to pay £12-15k for a car that was £9-12k only a few weeks back.

I'm sure a lot of it is with the World Cup and summer holidays people are not thinking about selling their car at the moment.
I think once the kids go back and everyone is back into work mode again we will see prices correct themselves a bit as more stock comes onto the market.
Interesting! I'll hold off as well and see what the autumn brings. Thanks!

The AUC 530d for the approved warranty alone plus I don't mind diesel in a car this size.
But you could warranty that car for £700 a year with BMW, so if you can find it £3k cheaper outside the main dealers it is worth doing.
Yeah, it's about £960.00 with a £250 excess.

There are literally NO decent 530d Touring for under £14k. Regardless of trim level or options.

There is ONE official approved used 530d Touring for under £16k nationwide. And that's the one that I spoke about above. Here: https://usedcars.bmw.co.uk/result/?body_type=Touri...

Yeah, just looked, has gone up a fair bit.

But you get my point, the price you are paying for a 2012 as an AUC can get you into a 2015 version outside the network.
Or get into a 2014 car and save £3k and put two years of warranty on it. So newer car, longer warranty and still a saving.
But there aren't any out of the network? I can't find a 530d SE newer than the one above with similar mileage for less money, can I?

I picked up a AUC 2012 535d Touring M Sport with 33k in January for £21k. There were plenty of 530d available at the time.

Strange that there are no such cars available now.
Yes, I can buy one for £21k easily!! But I don't really want to spend £21k on a 6 year old car.....

Confusingly the 528i came in both a 4 cylinder turbo and a straight 6 version.

I believe the 4 cylinder turbo was 2012 onwards.

Obviously it would be the 6 cylinder if it happened, but they’re like hens teeth!

Neither!!! hehe

Couldn’t bring myself to spend that much cash on a 6 or 8 year old car.

So I’ve put a deposit down on a not quite 3 years old fully loaded Volvo XC70 2.4 D5 laugh

Head beat heart on this occasion.

Yep, I hear what you’re saying.

But I think a 7 year old Volvo will actually be easier to sell in 3 or 4 years time than the BMW.

There are so few of them now and they’re really sought after, people love them.

A 10 year old 5 series SE with 100k on the clock much less so.

If I’m honest I’d rather have bought the BMW, but the towing capability with AWD also swayed my decision.
