My M140i went in for a while-you-wait service today (it's first), however on removing the oil filter it was discovered it had broken apart in the housing. So now they're doing some remedial work on this (replace filter housing, presumable flush to ensure no crud in the oil system). Apparently there's a Technical Service Bulletin on it, so it seems like it's a known issue, but I can't find any information on either the bulletin or prevalence of the issue anywhere. Repairs are being done under warranty but I'm a little concerned that this might result in longevity issues further down the line- I've not seen any signs suggestive of anything further being wrong but I can't imagine either starvation due to flow blockage, or filter particles/components being in the oil system are going to do much good.

Anyone have any further information they can share?

How many miles since the last oil change?
About 13k- variable/condition based.
I'll probably move to annual/10k servicing for peace of mind anyway.

In my case (as the thread OP), the car went in at around 9:30 for a while-you-wait.
About 10:30 they reported the issue and sorted transport for me to get back to work. Also sorted a hire car
Around 17:00 I popped back to grab some bits from the car, it was stripped down at that point.
They'd finished by around 1:30PM the next day.

4-6 hours of actual working time sounds about right. Don't know about part availability though.

Thanks. Just got it so all good.
Any lasting issues on yours? Mine feels ok for now.
Nothing I've been able to discern, no. I've probably done about 1,500 miles since the service and it's been impeccable (with the exception of getting a stone caught in one of the rear brake guards, which was creating the most dreadful grinding sound!)

Issue still alive and well from OP.
Placed my X4 M40i in for first service today at the main dealer here in Chester (UK) 11500 miles on the clock and purchased from new Sep 19. Received a phone call at mid day to say the engine oil filter had collapsed during the removal and that I shouldn’t be worried as it’s covered under warranty ??. No offer of courtesy car and asked if I minded them keeping my car overnight- like I had an option
Parts ordered but they couldn’t articulate what has been ordered or a timeframe for it to be repaired and ready for collection.

Not sure when the cutover was, but I was informed when I had my service in August 2020 (which also entailed a second broken filter) that they've updated both filter and housing design to prevent the issue from occurring going forward.
