This is probably covered elsewhere so apologies if I’m going over a well read topic.
Although not a BMW enthusiast I was taken with the 140. Not flash, good value and practical.
So have bought an 18 month old 5 door auto with a good spec including adaptive suspension.
I’m not one for yarping about town with traction control off in rudeboy style, but just like a useable car with an unstressed engine.
It seems rather good and quite economical. I’m not into comparisons with other hot hatches or some Golf R debate. I’m sure they all have their merits and appeals to different people. I just liked the 140 as a package. Road noise a bit loud, but I’m not driving with the radio on at present.
Anyway I’m sure some of you have one and just wondered what you think or what motivated you to buy one.
Kindest wishes
Steve.

Thank you.
It is interesting. I was brought up on a diet of 3.0 Litre Granadas ( you may have to Google that) S Class Mercs and XJ 6’s. I’m 56.
This in Eco Plus mode reminds me of those lazy autos. Of course it goes well. I bought it because it was good value and will do the things I want.
I like a car that can be equally good if one is in de- escalation mode not just fast all the time.
Plus it’s one of those cars that people who know, just know and to the rest of the world it’s just an ordinary albeit smart car.

Haven’t used mine enough to define an average, but would reckon on 30 and anything above as a bonus.

Actually to be discussing fuel consumption in respect of performance cars is in fact a non discussion. They are not economical and not purchased for that reason. If the fuel consumption is reasonable then that is a bonus.
We have a Citroen DS3 Hdi that in its 115,000 miles has averaged over 70 mpg, and is ideal for its intended purpose, but the performance and handling is not worthy of discussion!
A 125 D makes more sense than a 140 for economy over long distances and offers lots of performance.
The 140 is for me in reality an indulgence, but good value and interesting, others such as the Golf R, Audi RS3, RS Focus etc may be better, but I bought one for all the things it isn’t as well as what it is.
Kindest
Steve.

Points well made about fuel consumption and I’ve been driving lighty / normally and it’s 32 in mixed motorway and town.
You are of course correct as fuel is something that is being used all the time and performance some of the time.

Buying a performance car and basing one’s purchase on the highest MPG possible is not a great idea.
If the best figure is say 40 and a realistic average is say 28 then base the calculations on that surely.
Not a criticism of the poster who asked the question at all. but it would be disappointing to buy a car, then be disappointed in the fuel costs and then think about changing it.
That being said in Eco Pro mode, which only requires a prod of the throttle to bring on the power when required so it’s not as ghastly as I have read elsewhere, on a motorway cruise at 70 the trip computer does read 40mpg.
In town it’s 29.7 today.
Very versatile car I have to say.

It seems a good all round package to me.
Early days for me but it seems easy enough to live with. Nice engine, god spec, fun on tap and understated.

It’s the old dilemma.
We know what we should have, we know we don’t need all those horses, we know financially it is an extravagance...... etc.
Modern cars are just so good.

I think I can understand and agree with all those statements ! Different people, different opinions, but I think it is a car that can give one person different opinions on different days!

Manufacturers all go through engine problems at some stage. I had a Triumph Stag with overheating problems, they all did.
Porsche have had their fair share.
Ford will sort it.
Prices always find a level. The BMW 140 for example

It is plain. I find the seats good though in my short term ownership. The electric lumbar and side support make them snug and with the heating on it’s pleasant. Our RS 4 Avant which we have had for 11 years has great looking seats but they have to be climbed out of and tubby folk can’t have a lift!
There’s some great cars made. The Civic Type R, Golf R, Focus RS and so on. This Is just a sober, smart car to me, but it does go!
