BMW 540i - End of its life?

Hi All,
Having ploughed ££££ into my 1999 540i, I think it is finally finished.
The car had exhaust gasses in the coolant, which the garage originally thought was the head gasket. However, having torn down the engine at a substantial labour cost, the head gasket seemed fine, and instead there is a score mark/ line in the cylinder liner which we think must be to blame.
Three questions?
- We cannot work out how this line got there - any ideas, the engine has never been stripped before?
- Is this the end of the engine, the garage is mumbling something about a new block?
- Does anyone know its value as a parts car?
Thanks for all your help guys, I feel sad to give up on this car, but having already spent many ££££'s this year on it, I no longer have the money to carry on.
