Camshaft position sensor

Hi all,
A few months ago I was driving my 116i e87 2010 and white smoke appeared in my rear view mirror due to a load of oil spill on to my exhaust. The engine sounded very rough and obviously stopped using it since.
I put an OBD code reader in today and came up with P0015 which comes up as a failure with the camshaft position sensor- retarded timing bank 1. Is this what's causing the rough engine and oil leak by my manifold area? Has this caused damage to my engine? Or will a new CMP sensor generally set everything back to how it was?
