Hi

I have a question regarding the Official BMW MPPSK upgrade kit... It looks good, sounds good, but is expensive compared to getting more BHP against the myriad of companies out there doing ecu upgrades. What would you do? This would be for a 440i Grand Coupe

My thoughts:

BMW
Good - Spend £1900 for 35/40 extra BHP, get a fruity sounding exhaust, and have it all warranted by BMW for 2 years! plus you don't invalidate your warranty . BMW official product so the car doesn't feel too modified.
Bad - Spend £1900 for a relatively low upgrade in BHP, exhaust can be loud in sport/sport+ and a bit anti-social!

External tuners
Good - Can get up to 100+ BHP increase, cost around £750 - £1000 if you go to someone good, but perhaps as low as £250- £500 if you take a bit more of a risk.
No noisy/fruity exhaust, looks stock

Bad - Invalidates your warranty! . No guarantees there won't be a problem. When selling on, buyers don't like modified/fettled cars..i know i have just tried to sell a modified Seat Cupra ( not easy) ..Dealers are not interested in your car and how much money you have spent doing it up! You have to sell private , which is not good if looking for part-exchange deals!

Anyway, i digress, anyone have a MPPSK fitted..i would love to know what living with it on a daily basis is like? do you find it too loud in Sport/sport+? what about on the motorway..does it drone?

If i get positive feedback ...i will probably get it done! both options are good, which one would you do?

Hi Mr Sagman

Thanks for your reply..most reassuring i would say! I'm no youngster ( 68) so don't really want to be bombing around making too much noise. The compromise between Comfort and Sport/+ seems to be just right , in most posters opinion... Yeah, the start up can be noisy but i believe their is a method of keeping the revs up which reduces the early noise, till its warm. What really reassures me most is that in comfort mode it's doesn't drone on the motorway.

cheers

Interesting...some think it is very loud on start up, some think it is loudish, but ok, but does calm down after 30 seconds

looks like it might have to be the "old feathering the throttle" a tad technique!

Hi

Well i went ahead and got the MPPSK fitted to my 440i, even though i was worried about the extra noisy bits of the exhaust. Well i have to say anyone else who like me worried about it should completely forget about the worries and just have it done. Sounds great in Comfort, and awesome in Sport/+.

Infact on morning start up, which is probably the biggest issue with noise, it can be completely overcome, by slightly pressing the accelerator for the 30 seconds or so it takes to quieten down. it then settles down to almost "stock" revs.

It transforms the 440i into a different car, and i now take it out just for the pleasure of hearing that exhaust. As other posters have said if your in the mood you can make it bang, but if not, stick it in comfort and its just like driving stock.

So if your in two minds about having the MPPSK, just do it and have fun!. I'm 68 and still love modifying my cars!

enjoy!

Hi Stuart

Yep excellent addition ..just a shame that new generation of cars won't have the option!

Sign of the times me thinks!

Still an M340i sounds good to me

I recently viewed the Joe Achilles review on the M340i on YouTube... looks some motor, although i am not at all convinced by
the latest BMW's front grill design, I mean! not bad on the 340, but on the large SUV's and 7 series it looks mad ..Chinese Geeley chap been brought in? and as for the next generation 4 series, those flared nostrils remind me of Kenneth Williams... "Carry on BMW"!!
