Hi,

Looking for a bit of advice. I’m considering buying a BMW 330e hybrid and there is one available which is advertised as partial service history. When I enquired, it turns out the car missed its first oil change and then subsequently had an full service at BMW main dealer at 31,400 miles.

I’m not sure what the prescribed intervals are for this car, I think maybe 15,000 miles?

So my question is, would running on the same oil for 30k miles have damaged the engine materially and is this enough to give it a body swerve.

They have another very similar aged car which has 45k miles for the same money. This does have a full service history, albeit I’ve no details on where they were done. It doesn’t look like a BMW main dealer history.

My view is that if I put 20k miles on it, I’ll have an easier time shifting a 53k mile car than a 65k mile car when the time comes? Or is quibbling over 15,000 miles in a modern motor paranoid?

For what its worth, I sold my last car before it hit 55k miles. Roads around here are ste and beat the living daylights out the suspension. This will be my first BMW though.

What says everyone? Leave well alone, or worth a go?

Cheers

Just the dealer 3 month warranty, unless I want to oay for their extended warranty, I'm presuming via an aftermarket insurance type warranty underwriter.

The questions I would ask...

1) Is it much cheaper than other similar age/similar mileage 330e's?

2) Does it drive okay?

3) How does the rest of the car look like it's been maintained? The service reminders are so glaringly obvious I'd be a bit worried it had been abused.

Personally, there are enough 3 Series around I wouldn't take chances
1) yes it is suspiciously cheap due, I suspect, to the odd history.
2) dunno, haven't driven yet
3) haven't seen it in person, was wondering if it was worth the trip and thought I'd see what the consensus on engine durability was on here first

Err big question but where is this car for sale , is it Birmingham , Keithley or Leeds . Why has it escaped from the BMW network . There are loads for sale with 1 year warranty so from dealer so I would be looking at the "odd" one very carefully .
Its at one of the car supernarket type places, I presume the main dealership network wouldn't sell it due to it not having a FBMWSH.

I came to the same conclusion - Car Superstore in Peterborough. The low mileage car is white (not my thing) but it's a Sport (not M Sport mind) so has a nice interior. Very clean. The 45k mile one is black, basic SE spec, dull interior compared to the white one.
How long do you keep cars? If it's a long time, and you like the colour, the white one is the way to go (in my opinion).
Yes, thats the one. I'm not local so its not like I can look it over and get a feel for its condition and how its likely been treated.

My upper limit is really 15k so as nice as some of the lower milage SE's are I'm not keen to creep upward in price, yes its only an extra £1,200 but I'd have find that in ready cash before purchase. I don't do finance etc and I've sold my last car so can't be without a car for ages.

Right, I've done the sensible(ish) thing and thrown some more money in the pot and put a deposit down on a 66 plate with just 19,000ish miles on it. Hopefully get it next week at some point.

bouncebounce can't wait. biggrin
