Hello
Would I be very foolish to buy one of these ageing BMW 630s? They seem to be available for £4K upwards and the v8 seem even better value. Always fancied one despite their marmite looks and thinking of getting one for the commute when we are allowed back in the office. I live in Bristol and with the diesel ban on the horizon I need to get a petrol. If I picked one up for about £5k with over 100k on the clock and kept a few K for some bills would I get a few years out of one of these do you think? I’ve found one for 4K, was 5k in Chepstow with 125k on the clock, appears to have £3000s of recent bills , including a water pump and vanos work. Foolish? Cheap for a reason? Still a £50k car so I know it won’t be cheap to run but seems better value than a 3 series at the same prices.

Thank you both for the detailed responses. I too have not actually sat in one! I started looking at c30 T5 but they appear to be rare. The 6 series has lots available

By the sounds of it I need to look out for the N52 Engine in the earlier 630 examples. Im not worried on the slightly lower power or the VED price. I have a xc90 in the high VED at £555 or so so I'm use to paying that! Although two in that band may be a bit daft...... but that's only two A4 1.4 TFSI Lease payments right!!?

I need to look for oil leaks in the N52 and ask about the electric water pumps.

The spec statement I also believe to be true. All have leather, widescreen sat nav but very little else. Id want one with decent headlights, not candles for headlights and I really do like a good Hi Fi and it does not look like something you can upgrade in Halfords so Ill need to find one with the uprated stereo. a HUD would be nice too. A V8 would be nice but I normally do between 15 and 20K miles a year so I think a V8 would not make economic sense for me. Although I have several other cars so I could swap between that a my old Focus a few days a week.

Ive had 1 Series with RFT and Ive had Audis with 19 an 20 inch wheel so I suspect a combination of that would be terrible. They appear to come on 17s as standard and the ones Ive looked at have got non RFT so I think that would be a good combination.

What is the gearbox like, Ive seen some Manuals on the 630s. More suited to the Auto?

Thanks

Just spoke to a dealer in Chepstow and the one I wanted to look at has gone. Bugger. One in Swindon but paint work on the photos looks terrible. Looks like it’s been washed with a stone. I know it’s a 14 year old car and if I want a clean one , buy new etc but it looks really bad. Might take a look tho!

Well that was a shame. 80 mile round trip to look at metallic black 630i 2006. First impressions looked good, couldve done with a clean so I could actually see what I was dealing with. Covered in the sand from the recent rain we’ve had. Had a good look round. Started the engine walked to the back of the car and within 10 seconds the exhaust was red hot and stank of burning oil. I mean surface of the sun hot not just warm. Under neath there was clearly something dripping. Couldn’t reach to see if it was coolant or oil. Took it for a drive because I’ve never driven a 6 cylinder BMW. Drove well. Pulled, stopped, no weird noises. Took it back and they agreed to look at the leak if I wanted it. Looked around the back to go into the boot and wiped some dust off. Clearly been re-sprayed at some point , or rather, paint thrown on it and left to dry in a sand storm. Terrible. Tobacco roll up in the storage areas and leaves from what looked like last autumn in the boot. One key. I guess this is what you get at this end of the market. I’ll keep looking and add a few k to the budget. The know I’m not going to get something great at this age but at least present the car be sold.

£4K!!...... the leak I could've would've lived with. Possible fixed at that garage or afterwards. But I couldn't deal with the respray. I do like to look after my cars, every time I washed it I would see it and feel it. Would drive me mad! Walked away and thought if I really need a good one Ill be looking into the 6 to 7K band. Which is fine, Ill keep looking, No rush!

Thank you for another good comment. Seems that there are some cherished examples out there. By increasing my budget to 7 to 8 I can see some facelift 630 and those v8s look even better! I’ll come back when I’ve looked at some others....

I would appreciate the upload please. I can see what options were available which may help me with my search. I’ve noticed the gear lever is different in some, the newer ones have lights and a sleeker looking lever. Was this part of the facelift, together with the location of the centre brake light?

A good looking one near me has come up for sale but it’s a 635d. Probably another Bristolian looking to off load a diesel!

One in Yate too, nearby. 2009 24k miles but £12k!

2006 630i convertible in grey 103k miles for £5k looks too good to be true

Thank you so much to everyone that has uploaded brochures images. I can image how painstaking that was! I’ve been refreshing various web sites daily and not many new ones appearing near me. I might venture further afield once they open next week

Ah yes, the older engine is supposed to be less prone to breaking. Plus I’ve just read the Convertible Abuse thread..... I’ll look again for a Coupe.

Afternoon, many thanks for the PM. Bit too pricey for me though that one. Ive found a 635d 50 miles North of me which I intend to look at next Saturday(Mrs back at work this week so I'm on child duty working from home during the week)

Its just under 90K, 2008 58 plate, missing Sat Nav / Widesrcreen , but cup holder at £7400. Looks in great condition.

Good evening. I’ve just finished 6 stellas and purchased this one via a deposit to reserve until collection at the weekend. Just hope it’s got the right engine when I lift the bonnet!!

https://www.jbmotorcentre.co.uk/used-bmw-6-series-...

I started looking at 635d despite saying I must have a 630 due to Bristol diesel ban so apologies to those of you that went off in that direction to help me. However I couldn’t bring myself to spend almost £7500 on the on 635d I was going to look at, that would’ve given me 4 diesels outside the house and I really needed a petrol. Otherwise sell one of my dervs to make space for a petrol and, well, start shopping for another small petrol car if I had the 635d. Anyhow, I’ve been watching this one for awhile and exchanged a few messages with the dealer and he contacted me as soon as the extra videos and photos were up on his site. I tried to take on board as much info as you gave me regarding the engine types etc. This one has sat nav widescreen, factory tints, folding mirrors, extended interior light package, cream leather and a few other bits. driver seat looks a bit saggy but to be expected after 120k miles and 14 years. No cup holder though!! Not that I allow drinking in my cars!! Good history. Only downside is one key so I’ll be looking at how to get another.

I’ll await the “oh you shouldn’t get that one...” “... that’s my old car and I smashed that into a tree” etc but I don’t have the patience to travel over 120 miles to kick the tyres on one. Paint looks great, has had some oil leaks over the years according to the MOT history but all clean now.

It’s £555 VED, same as my XC90 and at £5k I’ll leave some spares £ to check that the belt and pumps can get replaced. Collect Saturday hopefully, may even ask for the free delivery. I’m going to use their 15 month warranty once I’ve read the small print. Wish me luck

I won’t be going to work again until august so I’ll look forward to stretching her legs for a Fun drive. I’ll look to work from home and alternate between this and other cars for the commute so I plan to keep miles low and keep her for several years. I can’t help but feel guilty buying this at a time when some people are in pretty bad place with covid fall out and jobs etc but next time it could be me so let’s spend some money now and enjoy it.

Some questions come to mind: it’s an older 2006 model yet has the newer gear shift. The 2006 one I looked at had the old gear shift.... is this a late 2006 do you think?

It has a M steering wheel. Was this an option

What colour is it!!?
Thank you to everyone that as commented and shown interest! I’ll post some photos when I get it!

Thanks shame about the mirrors. Description on their site says it does... must be a typical copy and paste that some dealers do. Not a deal breaker but I better have a good look round to check it’s got everything else they claim it has!

Anyone know a good Indy BMW in Bristol!?

Wow. Thank you very much. Let’s hope that the gear stick doesn’t come off in my hand then!

I don’t like the fact it’s got the smokers package..... probably explains all those Christmas trees on the rear view mirror.

Well I have it.... Absolutely stunning condition. Drove 60 miles home. Only concern is that braking from 65-70 hard makes the steering wheel vibrate a little bit. Assuming it’s just brakes or tyres so I’ll get that sorted and looked at. Drives really well. Engine sounds lovely and so far so good. So unless it dumps oil and coolant all over itself then I’m very happy. Everything works

I simply don’t understand how a 3 litre straight 6 in this condition is worth less than £5k! I guess it’s the running costs and potential for an immediate 4 figure bill if something breaks

I feel daft taking photos. There’s one! I’ll take some more in a more suitable surrounding! For the first time in what must be years I’ve just gone for a pointless drive.... love it!

Redish Autosport are not far from me. I’ll take it there for a check and see what they recommend in the way of work.

Thread is still active!
Here is another of mine in stratus grey. Very happy after one month. Few things to fix, air con is nothing but hot air, wobbly braking from 65mph and the BMW door lights do not illuminate and the stereo is so bad I swear it’s broken.. but very happy with everything else

Hope the viewing goes well and you get to drive home in a new car!

Swapped the cream mats for some eBay specials in Black. These actually seem to be better quality. I’ll shampoo the cream ones and keep as spare

Good luck! Hope it goes well. I’ll be back later for some good news I hope

You asked how I was getting on. I love it. I’ve only completed short journeys so far because I’ve not been to the office since the end of March. I’ve not had this engine before and I think it’s fantastic, although I’ve not really driven much to compare. Ive given it a good go on the local ring roads and it seems to have no problems with the gearbox changing through on sport mode or normal. Very quick car for me at least. I was out in the rain yesterday and I felt that the front felt very light. I tip toed around some roundabouts. Not sure if that’s normal in a car this size.

I’ve seen between 18mpg and 40mpg on my short trips.

They feel very small inside given its external size. I’ve come from a 2018 a4 avant black edition and I don’t miss it at all (apart from the 3D B&O)

I turn around to look at it after I park, I look at it in window reflections and I got a wave from a nice lady in her 2008 6er as we passed in traffic a few days ago. I don’t see many on the roads and I’m chuffed to bits with it. The body is in such great condition that I worry about where I park it so I take my shed Focus for most trips.

I have no idea why I’ve been spending £3000 down payment and £300 a month on newer stuff. I’m Hooked so much that I’m currently watching some old 3.0 z4 on eBay and cleaning my garage but I’ll have to get rid of one car before I do that. Found this video of them being manufactured

This is great news! Did you look at many others or have you had one before?

Did you get chance to drive it far?
