Seriously need some help, what do i go for?

The X5 looks a bit meatier of course, but I am struggling to see additional benefits for X5 over X3. Internal tech now pretty much standard in both M Sport versions, i read somewhere the interior spacing is within an INCH in height and length between X5 and X3.

The X5 obviously bigger in size and a fraction more spacious but given the additional couple of grand to purchase and the increase on insurance and running costs... is it really worth it?

thanks both. The tech on 2019 onwards is basically the same, previous versions definitely had big tech differentials between X3 and X5 but now the differences are minor, all the main packs on X5 are available for X3.

The X5 will obvs be more comfortable given the edge on extra space and floor, but usage wise, it is more of a handy option rather than a necessity.

I guess my point is, given the X5 is slightly more to buy, more thirsty and more to insure, it needs to be worth those additions for me to make that jump and right now, i'm not seeing a big enough differnetial to make me go "yep, definitely X5".

cheers for the responses. Part of my thinking is the one time i try to put lots in an X3 and find it doesn't fit, i'll kick myself for not going bigger. "Go hard or go home" so to speak.

However part of me feels it's a bit ego driven too, like, an X5 just feels and sounds and looks more special than the X3, and that's my ego telling me that.

the cost differential isn't massive but insurance will be more, as is running costs.

But i am feeling like if it aint the X5 i'll regret it, so trying to find one for a test drive now.

The X3 is very close in size but yes given it's lighter can expect it to be nippier.

I think the fact you can cramp in up to 7 seats could be useful every now and then so may be the swing factor seeing as not much difference in cost.

thoughts on the xDrive40i vs xDrive 30d please? Mainly town driving (motorway when necessary) so obvious thought would be Petrol but seems to be around £3-5K premium for the pleasure of going for a thirstier petrol engine... is it worth it?

The diesel will suit the car more with its low end shove but I think the 40i has decent torque low down as well but not like the 3.0d, round town neither will be great on MPG and if you're only doing a few miles I'd probably go for the petrol.

cheers, any worries on the DPF?

Yes I saw the EV but it's just out of our price range. Plus we thought going for the X5 we may as well go for a 7 seat option which we would lose going EV.

So guys, it's DEFINITELY the X5 and thanks for your help in getting to that point.

Reading up a lot on the Petrol vs Diesel option which is now the most difficult decision to make, both engines sound good (Petrol edges it) but there seems to be a £3K premium for it which i can't make sense of.

Good drive on the X5, its pretty massive. The highe seating actually allows for better coverage view over the bonnet), bit worried how the Mrs will find it so we're going next friday for her to test it out.

Only thing we're pondering is waiting out a few months now all the keen buyers have come and gone, might be some better options in a month or two before Sept?

Decided not to drive the X3 as only had limited time and I know it's X5, go hard or go home. I'll end up regretting not going for the X5 at some point so just avoid always wondering what could have been.

I wish i spent more time on the iDrive system as there's just so much to learn

What did you get in the end?
So it's definitely the X5, with Tech pack. And there's plenty available on 30d's (less so on 40i's).

Have spoken to a few dealers but i am battling on price, think the market for used cars is so oversaturated they're not budging on price. I would like one now, i NEED one in a couple of months, so happy to do a deal tomorrow if there's one for a good price, but right now it's not being entertained so will keep checking.

Saying that... i did see a beautiful Cayenne available for the same price...

ive been trying to buy a used well spec'd G05 X5 for months with no success as anything with any spec seems to sell within hours of being put up on BMW used. Dealers won't budge on price, with one i enquired about putting the price up from £43k-£46.5k after i got off the phone due to the enquires they'd had about the car.

I even upped my budget to target higher priced models circa £50k plus, but this made no difference whatsoever. I managed to have a chat with one friendly sales guy, he said the demand for used X5 is insane, saying they could sell their stock 10 times over. Really bizarre indeed. Good thing is once i do get into one prices should hold firm as supply is most certainly out stripping supply!
Me and you must be in competition! Same thing with me.

I'm looking in the same price bracket, with 7 seat options only however. And agree, i've seen little movement. However, i have had some luck on price shifts on the 30D, two different dealers. However that's still at the mid-40s range and i said I would only take a Diesel on the lower £40s.

For 40i, no movement whatsoever. I might have to bite the bullet and just pay the asking price but my pride is stopping me from doing so. I want a car now, i NEED a car in a few months. Will they still be demanding these prices end of August as demand dwindles, furlogh winds up? We'll have to see...

So... i've bottled it.

I've got an X5 deposit down, and now i'm thinking of cancelling... It is the car I want, no doubt.

But, after putting down the deposit, has been a sense of unease if i am stretching us a bit too far on cost.

£49k on the X5. Reason for bringing this thread back is i decided to take a quick peak back on the X3. I know it's not as jazzy or high flying, but i can get the exact same packages for around £12k cheaper.

yes, it's a drop on engine from the 40i to the 20i, and obviously losing 7 seat optionality, but we're talking practically the same car and technology for £12k difference.

Factoring in the insurance on X5 is DOUBLE the X3... i'm thinking we're overpaying on the X5 frown

Welcome people's thoughts, but we're talking big differences, perhaps £15k over 5 years. That's a big number.

To the OP:

I come from a G31, which is the same (perceived) quality level as an G15 X5. I bought a G01 X3 M as I prefer the size, an X5 barely fits my garage, let alone most parking spaces, and quality wise the X3 is really not far off a 5 series/X5. There is some cheaper plastic at the lower door panel, but apart from that it is a very car like driving experience.

I would advise to go for an X3 with adaptive dampers and the acoustic glazing (front side windows).

As to cost, if you are already having buyers remorse, don’t go for the X5 - these cars are best enjoyed when cost is not a priority.
So, X3 pick up Weds morning and i cannot wait!

that M40i engine is something else, hearing that cold start up, beautiful.

So far am very pleased with the X3 M40i.

She's got the space of an SUV, so well equipped in the boot space and everyone can sit comfortably. Few minor annoyances (cargo nets on back of front seats!) but nothing that will frustrate me much (plus i'll be sat in the front anyway right!).

But the car is absolutely rapid, really shifts, an SUV size albeit not as big as X5 or GLE, but the engine makes it a much more enjoyable drive. I think i was onto a winner with either to be honest, an X5 or X3, but dropping down to the X3 with the M40i engine and saving around £9k for me was a worthwhile saving.
