Hi guys, so I have a dilemma to choose between the 745e vs 730D MHT.. a nice dilemma to have!

I'm going to covering around 30K miles in the next 12 months so would prefer something waftable. Work has given me a generous car allowance and so I am looking at some very respectable lease deals on both of the above cars. They actually come out cheaper than the 5 Series or X5 and have more toys as standard.

My question is really aimed at anyone that currently owns or has owned the 745e. The fuel consumption claimed is "interesting." I cannot see how they get away with the claimed 121-146 mpg for what is essentially the standard 6-pot 3 litre turbo, with addition of a 13kw battery pack to aid economy. I do have a charging point at home, but is it substantially better than the diesel for the long run?

On the other hand, I currently have a 635D, E64 as my daily, and I love the B57 engine as I still hit 50mpg on a motorway, and around 40mpg on shorter trips. I can source the 730D for even less than the 745e. As both cars will be leased with full maintenance, I'm not worried about servicing and I get a mileage allowance as well. So what would you choose?

Leftfield from a mate is to consider the Tesla Model 3 LR! laugh Too many choices!

Is the 740i the same set up, but Petrol only ?

If so, the economy figures on that, may be more representative of what you’ll achieve smile
You would think so, but then hybrid technology is tied in so that it adds power when it sees fit.. this is the issue for me as I cannot see anywhere that accurately explains how and in what form. Either way it's got a big chuffing turbo so any scale of economy will be instantly lost the first time you enjoy the boost wink

The car can recharge itself (don't get me started on self-charging hybrid rubbish) but I can plug it in before I set it off and that is bit I am interested in. I'm not worried about tax as the lease company deals with that, I just need to understand what is reasonable to expect as an honest MPG average.

Yes it's certainly looking that way. Same engine in my 635D and I absolutely love it although this has 8 gears compared with my current 6. It's also on a special deal and works out a few quid cheaper. Insurance is around £100 less to boot. Of course if I could save with higher mpg's then that wouldn't matter.

What's the short and long drive split? How many -10miles journeys vs +20 miles? I would go with a 730d (no 740d??), but if short trips represent the majority all the emission tat will get upset, so a 745e would be a nicer choice because you will be able to go on electric pretty much everywhere (see Harry Garage x5 45e reviews).
Any longer distance driving diesel everytime.
So the commute to the office is 45 miles round trip and I work from home for most days. I get a call to service a client and that can be anywhere in England, Ireland Scotland and Wales, for emergency response I will fly but for upgrades I will drive and stay in hotels. I can have a Tesla Model 3 LR for the same money but according to Tesla and Plugshare the charging infrastructure is not quite there yet in Ireland.

Thanks for the headsup regarding Harry's Garage - I watched that and was thoroughly impressed, although with the X5, it does have a proper 22KW battery and the 7 is only 10kw which is a real shame. The lease cost of the X5 is prohibitive with the mileage that I think I will cover, but if it were the same or similar I would be ordering one. It's quite amazing!

Looks like another vote the trusted 730D then.

Hi Nuno,

Thank you for your detailed synopsis which is most appreciated. However, due to the time elapsed since I first posted, my friend has talked me into the left-field solution which actually arrived on the 19th. Needless to say now (and I wasn't sure then), this is the best decision I've made, and although totally the opposite of what I had envisaged, I am blown away by the car in general. 635D is sold, two XJS's are sold, only the Porsche left as an ornament when I can be bothered to throw more money at it.

Think I can finally say, "Bye bye ICE, hello electrification" and I would never have thought that ten years ago! smile
