E39 535i thoughts

Anyone got any thoughts on these? I'm currently driving a 523iSE touring but got my eye on a few 535i Sport saloons. Presume the V8 is pretty bombproof? Any Nikasil issues? TIA.

Might sound like a naive question, but what are the key things that make the V8 more costly to run (other than fuel, obviously!) I am assuming service items are more, there's 2 banks of cylinders - but that's just guesswork.
