I understand it is now compulsory to have winter tyres if you're driving in alpine regions during the winter in Austria.

However, there is a suggestion that summer tyres are permissible if you are carrying snowchains.

Can anyone throw any light on this? A Google search has thrown up conflicting views.

When they checked you I assume there was snow on the road as there isn't a requirement to have winter tyres on if the roads are clear.

Is my assumption right?

That would be great. Thanks.

(I think there might be different rules for residents and visitors BTW.)

Below is the reply I got from the Austrian tourist office.

In effect, winter tyres ARE compulsory. Failure to comply results in a fine of up to €5000, presumption of guilt in the event of an accident and invalidation of insurance.

I'm surprised about the lack of publicity this has had (apparantly the law changed last year; previously visitors were OK with summer tyres if they carried snow chains).

I wonder how many Brits have been caught out.

Thank you very much for your enquiry.

Winter tyres are compulsory in Austria until April 15th. Alternatively you may also use all season tyres marked with M+S (mud & snow).

Snow chains are only accepted as an alternative when the entire road is heavily covered with snow (Otherwise you would be damaging the road).
