From BMW's site today:

X5 30d = 245bhp
X5 40d = 306bhp

530d = 245bhp
535d = 299bhp

330d = 245bhp
335d = 286bhp

The 30d all seem to be the same output, so I guess they're identical engines. However the next diesel up is a different output on each model. And on the X5 it's called a 40d instead of 35d, but only a marginal increase in power on the 535d.

Does anyone know the differences?

As far as I know the 40d engine is a 3.0 Single Turbo unit while the 35d engine is the more familiar 3.0 twin turbo unit.
Interesting... so the 40d is the 30d with a remap?

Just checked the BMW site, and it states:

"Twin turbochargers with variable turbine geometry"

So the 40d is a twin tubby unit.
