Hi everyone,

Would appreciate advice from owners or anyone with experience of Triples or MT07s.

Background - new rider, just passed Mod2 last week. 45 years old, 5ft 11, 15 stone and would like to use the bike for fun at evenings/weekends in fair weather to start with while I build up experience.

Budget - £5k max, looking at getting either a 1-2 year old MT07 or 4-5 year old Triple.

Read all the reviews and watched videos. Sat on both, and love both, can't decide. Will try to get test rides soon, but not sure if possible as I've just passed.

MT07 is a great bike, lot of fun, will be pretty new and affordable. Not many for sale near me and those that are base spec with very little extras fitted.

Many say the Triple is a much better bike in comparison. Have read conflicting opinions on getting an R (excellent brakes, hard suspension?) vs non-R version (not so good brakes, better suspension for bumpy roads?). For a new rider like me who won't be pushing it, do I need the upgraded brakes, adjustable suspension, does it justify the extra cost?

Is the 2013 update much better than pre 2013 (under seat exhausts) version?

In terms of quality, will older Triples hold up better than the newer Yamaha? I know the MT07 still being a great bike is built to a budget and some say they don't do well when older and exposed to the wet.

My head says get a newer MT07 with low mileage to start with, but my heart says get the older Triple with average mileage.

Tough choice as I don't have much experience, so any advice is greatly appreciated.
Cheers guys!

Thanks to everyone for the replies.

I am leaning towards the Triple. Difficulty is finding a post 2013 R within my budget. There are non-R versions 2013 and newer and there are pre-2013 R (usually have arrow cans) versions I could afford.

Given the choice pre-2013 R version or newer post 2013 standard version?

Bearing in my mind my original question regarding better brakes and adjustable suspension being worth the extra for a newbie.

I guess the R versions do hold value better and usually have more options fitted. Really tempted to stretch to £5.5k to get a 2013/14 R version and probably add an aftermarket can later. Although the standard can still sounds amazing to me.

Anyone moved from pre2013 to the newer model and notice a big difference?

Cheers

Wow! Thanks again for all the responses everyone.

Had no idea my original question would spark such a heated debate. Just goes to show the passion you all have for bikes. Definitely given me lots to think about before I buy.

Considering everything, it boils down to what I think will be the best fit for me as a first bike and as a new rider. But as I mentioned as starting out as a new fair weather rider to begin with, Im in no hurry and will take my time to sit on/test ride as many as I can. Hope this crap weather passes and I can get riding again soon.

Some great banter on here though!

Come on guys be nice to cmaguire! he's missed out on one the best films made of all time, only IMO!

I do feel for you regarding the premiums in London.

Don't know your age, but I'm 45 and live in an ok part of the West Midlands.

Street triple insurance comes in at £400 and an MT07 £260.

I know people are saying that the Street triple is the much better bike, but as a newbie looking for a first fun (and relatively cheap) bike, not interested in top end speed, the MT07 seems to fit the bill perfectly and also will be about 3 years newer (2016/17), lower mileage than a street and fits well within my 5K budget (probably with extras and an aftermarket exhaust already fitted)

£400 insurance for a newbie on Triple is cheap, but I do also need to factor in buying leathers, sat nav and security for the bike. Perhaps I'll be better off getting a year or two experience on the MT07 (and building up some NCB) then moving onto something better such as a Street or Speed Triple.

Thanks Djkirk3000.

Had not considered the Z800 due it being a 800cc bike, thought maybe too much for me and insurance would be really high..

Looks amazing though and you are right, insurance is pretty good too at £296. So not much more than the MT07 and seems a good 2015/16 can be had for around £5.2K.

So Z800 added to the list! Cheers!

Also Djkirk3000,

Can I ask me being a newbie, did you find the weight of the Z800 ok when you first had it as a new rider? Seems a great bike for the money.

Thanks.

Thanks again Djkirk3000,

Some say that the back brake is poor. Have you noticed this? or changed anything to improve the bike?

I just ask as I'm a pretty cautious driver due to my inexperience and did tend to use the back brake quite a bit during my training.

Pricing seems very good compared to an MT07. Have seen a 2016 Z800, ABS 8K miles for £5.4K. May be able to knock them down closer to £5K.

Cheers again for the advice.

Cheers ringsound, I know what you mean. I’m getting into biking to enjoy it and be able to switch off from it all while riding (still concentrate obviously! You guys know what I mean!).

From the little riding I’ve done (CBT and DAS), I know it’s going to grow into a passion, especially come the nicer weather. All training and tests were done in really crap weather.

Problem I’m having is no dealerships are letting me test ride as I only passed a couple of weeks ago. There are so many bikes I have sat on and thought wow!

Quality feel of the new Kawasaki Z650 impressed me (Also 0% at the moment) Think it may be between that and a newish MT07 now based on budget/insurance/running costs and easy for a new rider to get experience/have fun.
Tough deciding when I can’t test ride any bike though!

Appreciate your reply MC Bodge.

What appeals to me the most about the bikes I have mentioned is that they should be fun to ride and are affordable. I'm starting riding relatively late and want to get something that I want to ride all the time and hopefully should be reliable. I have looked at cheaper bikes local to me and to be honest choice is limited, I can either get something older at £2-3k or the newer models at £4-4.5K. I'm fortunate enough to afford a newer bike and If I do decide to change/upgrade in a year or two, hopefully won't lose too much on a 1-2 year old bike.
Think I read on here someone getting a newish MT-10 as a first bike. I'm not that ambitious (or confident) so I thought a 1-2 year old MT07 or Z650 would be a good starting point.
Cheers

To everyone who contributed to my original question on this thread I want to give a big thank you. Gave me so much info and advice. Looked at so many bikes and in the end went for this. Just felt right and ticks all the boxes and more as a first bike for me. Got a great deal and can't wait to pick it up soon.

Thanks. Being the type of rider I am, I think it is more than enough bike for me. Hopefully should last me longer than 6 months!
Cheers.
