Last winter I took the car off the road to carry out a few upgrades and repairs.

The engine had a complete makeover and that is being run in at the moment.

I stripped everything out of the inside and lined with several layers of heat and sound insulation.

After driving the car as my daily for the last week I can report that this sound and heat insulation actually works!

After being stuck in Wandsworth one-way system and generally doing a bit of cross town driving the car was much cooler than it was before.
The transmission tunnel was warm but nothing like it was before! So a success story there.

As for the sound insulation, this seems to change the characteristics inside the car.
It is still noisy but different!
There are less rattles and the engine seems to have a muted sound to it.
Now, I can hear all the various whistles from the gaps in between the tops of the doors and the roof et cetera, build quality here is awful! These noises are highlighted as the general noise in the cabin is less.

As for the exhaust, this seems even noisier for some reason! Is this because there is less overall noise in the cabin?
I believe this is the case and therefore the exhaust noise seems more prominent, really in your face!

In conclusion, this was a worthwhile modification but the downside is the constant exhaust drone which is really getting on my nerves.

How anyone would use one of these cars as a daily is beyond me.

The roads in the south-east here are terrible which really highlights stiffer suspension and low profile tyres, (not just my car but any cars with sporting credentials). No wonder I am happy driving my old ML most of the time.

Driving the chim, "with spirit "Is what it is all about and I can forgive the levels of noise during these periods but otherwise I could be tempted by something more user friendly, (shock horror!), but what, there isn't a huge amount af performance alternatives on offer rolleyes

Don't get me wrong, there is hardly anything that will stick with this down fast country lanes and B roads, it really is phenomenal but......................

A one off Bob.

A friend had it made for his cerb but never fitted it. I modified it to fit the chim.

Yes, you are correct in its source.

Even though the shape of the cerb is similar to the chim, the front of the chim must be flatter.

I had to trim a little of each side of the inner face.

Ole, turbo my car, are you mad!

Alun or anyone else. I would love to borrow a sleeved exhaust and try it out as it is the horrible drone at 2000 rpm that stands out head and shoulders above all the rest of the noise!

No real issues at all.

The centre console ends up being a tad higher but doesn't necessitate anything other than letting off the handbrake cable so it comes up another click or so.

I put several layers on the inside of the pedal box but had to remove some as I couldn't depress the clutch fully smile

Hi Peter, you are welcome to sleeve or part sleeve my system currently stored somewhere very close to you and give it a try.

Personally, I think that the drone is the lack of pre-cats. I have had lots of combinations on my two cars and the worst drone is full decat and standard exhaust..

Standard silencer and full cats - no drone and nice but quiet burble on both cars
standard silencer, act y piece and pre-cats - a bit more bark, no drone and slightly louder burble
act cherry bombs, act y piece and pre-cats - proper loud bark, no drone and great noise/burble (around 114 DB at Snetterton from memory)
standard silencer, clive f y piece and no pre-cats - sounds amazing under load, lots of front noise, lots of drone and good burble.

Perhaps the earlier car are better insulated to noise/heat than the later ones? All i know is that on a long-drive at any sort of speed, I cant really listen to music in my current car but could on the early one with the full act system and pre-cats in.
Graham. I think I will try your system and see if there is a drone difference.
