Have been browsing the usual formats for Chimaeras everyday trying to work out how much to spend to get a good example. The prices seem to range from £9k to £20k+ with similar cars being priced nearly double the price of each other.

Just wondering why this is and whether the higher priced cars sell.

I have narrowed my choice down to a red or yellow MK2 with the TVR rear lights and different number plate. The yellow ones seem to be more expensive than other colours, I would of thought this was an acquired taste of colour and can't see a reason for it.

I also prefer the Griffith wheels but not many seem to be specced with this option.

Hoping to buy the above for £11k, is this feasible?

Ah right, I've been looking at 400's. A 430 would be ideal but seem to be rare. 450's tend to be £15k unless previously crashed.

I'm buying in Jan so maybe the cooler weather will bring the prices down.

Thanks for the reply, I went to a TVR meet a few weeks ago and was a passenger in two Chimaeras - loved it as I thought I would.

£11k is what I will have to spend, £15k would mean another 10 months of saving frown I sold my S500 in Nov last year and cannot wait another 10 months so I will buy the best I can afford for my budget with hopefully at least the outriggers done. I am quite handy with a spanner and have replaced engines etc.

This will be a second car as I have an Accord for boring stuff so if I need to work on it, I won't be stuck for transport.

Yours sounds like a good example and a steal at the price! But will you regret it...

Loads on sale at the moment, people seemed to be hanging on to them over the winter then all deciding to sell when the weather picked up!

Two types of owners IMHO, and I hope no one will get offended, ones with active chequebooks and ones with active socket sets smile

The former seem to have shinier cars but spend triple what the latter do to buy and run their cars. If you are the former then you must buy the right car from the off. If you can handle a tinker then I can’t think of another car that gives you the same bang for the buck....

The really nice thing is the wealth of knowledge and helpful owners on this forum. I’ve been away for 5 or so years after stupidly selling my 400 and now I’m back having just bought a 400, it’s nice to see a lot of the same enthusiasts still here and still loving the Chimaera experience!

Good luck with finding the right one for you!
Yeah this is partly the reason I want a TVR, because the the forums are quite active on here and people are friendly and happy to help.

I have also fancied getting involved with meets and shows.

I'm quite good with anything car related and will attempt anything after research except welding which is why I want this work completed.

Did you post pictures of your new purchase?

Welcome back! cool

Wow so you picked one up for £6k! Have you got any pictures? How many miles?

I prefer the later one due to the lights, number plate and door buttons being under the mirror although I'm sure I could change the rear lights and the buttons wouldn't bother me too much but there are so many variations I just chose those specifics to make it easier picking one.

I have read about the grey and white chassis. Suppose it's pot luck with either. Until you've done at least a 2 inch body lift you'll never know what condition it's in...

I'd be willing to buy a car that needed chassis work if it ticked the boxes and was cheap enough - I just don't want one that's been accident damaged.

I wouldn't overlook a Cat d ,there are loads around and these cars can be written off with very little damage .
The non specialist insurance companies did not want to get them repaired .
It's ok buying them but you struggle to sell anything CAT registered. There's a red one on eBay that was up for £9k with no offers which ended and now it's on an auction with a starting price of £7k and still no bids. It looks a good example and is halve the price of some but no interest for some reason.

The car passed me in Stone and the next day it was on eBay which was a coincidence. If it was bright red or yellow I'd consider it for £7k..

I was looking at either an RS6 or E55 to buy then after reading about turbo, suspension and gearbox problems decided on the E55.

Long story short I was in Blackpool with some friends and saw a Chimaera go down the front which prompted me to see how much they went for - I couldn't believe they were within my price range! I always thought they were £20k+ cars and was amazed to see quite a few around the £10k mark which made me change my mind and start getting into TVR's. I'd always liked the brand and you can't beat the sound of that Rover V8 flying past you, I'd just never imagined I could afford one so soon.

I agree they are well undervalued but in a way I'm glad because it means I get to enjoy one at 32 instead of 52 smile

An interesting thread which has answered a lot of questions I had but basically the main one is will I get a decent Chimaera for £11k and I think the answer is yes but I may have to forgo the colour I want to find a decent example and consider respraying/ wrapping.

I've had a look today and notice quite a few have been 'reduced for a quick sale'.

I'm also maybe considering the cat D route as if I can get one cheap enough it may be worth the hassle come selling time. Just wondering if it will affect my insurance premium.

Went to look at one yesterday, was a disappointment.

It was a CAT N which I wasn't going to consider but I was informed it was wrote off due to a scrape on the side. I was sent pictures of the damage which looked like no big deal and I wondered why you'd go through the rigmarole of an insurance claim.

I'd bid on it on eBay yesterday afternoon just before it ended but didn't win it because there was a reserve. I was hoping because this is the second time it was listed with no interest that if it was as good as he said, I would be able to negotiate a deal.

Went down to see it after work which was a 50 minute journey. Was really excited on the way down almost nervous as I've been looking forward to owning one for such a long time.

Had a look round the front - it had the usual stone chips which is no major issue. Went round the back and noticed a crease on the rear quarter where the paint had bubbled up down a line, also there was a few cracks on the bottom corner. Went round the other side to find exactly the same thing rolleyes. It had obviously been rear ended and that was why it was written off but the seller said he didn't know why it was like that...

Asked about the full service history with every reciept from new to be handed some paperwork which contained invoices from over the years but also insurance and tax receipts. Stuff like this doesn't need to be included and just fills the folder up. There was no bookpack and no service history book, was told cars of this year didn't have stuff like that laugh

Was told the outriggers had been fully done within the last 12 months, looked like it had been painted underneath quite a few years ago as there was rust showing through the paint.

The log book said it had been owned since June 2018, was told it was wrote off in Nov 2017 and he only got it back in June. Also he bought it off the insurance company for £9k.

I decided it wasn't for me - best thing about it was hearing it fire up but I wasn't being blinded by that.

Oh well, the hunt goes on. But I won't be buying CAT anything. Just not worth it.

Sorry....always wanted one and am still keeping an eye out for one. Have had 2 E39 540i M Sports and an E60 M5 but never an E39 M5.

Was just comparing how well prepared it was as a private sale compared to that 430. If they had spent a few hours on that 430 with some elbow grease it would have looked a ton better.
I had an E39 535i and last year an E39 525d M Sport - I need to own the E39 M5 at some point in my life. The E60 M5 doesn't interest me.

All I can think about these days is owning a TVR Chimaera! The M5 does have an addictive V8 tone but the Rover V8 is in a league of it's own and that's what I'm looking forward to starting up every morning and annoying the neighbours biggrin

Looks a nice example. I like to see original book packs and history books.

Short MOT though. And no mention of chassis work but at least he is willing to put it on a ramp.

Roof looks like new - not my favourite shade of red personally.

Did the OP get himself a Chimaera in the end??
Hi All,

Long story short I realised I couldn't afford a TVR just yet. I had a max budget of £8k in the end and from the cars I viewed in that price range I didn't dare take the plunge and buy a potential money pit.

I then stopped looking as I was gutted the dream was over. For now anyway.

I've read over all posts posted since I was last on and they have been an interesting read!

The reason for coming back on here is that I was delivering some MDF to a customer and heard the telltale sound of that Rover V8 firing up behind me. I walked around the wagon and lo and behold there was a blue Chimaera roaring down the road. Just can't beat that sound.

I think I will own one at some point but only when I have 12-14k for a half decent one.

And it has to be red or yellow.

Yellow stands out which is what you want with a sports car, although that red is amazing too.

Maybe colour preference goes down to age, i.e the younger generator prefer the louder colours. I know i do!

I decided on a bright orange front door instead of the boring white and brown everyone else has on my street.

Hi mate, not currently, I decided I didn't have the budget.

Still contemplating what to do as I don't really want to sell my A8 4.2tdi, it's a perfect all rounder.

I also keep looking at C5 RS6's!
