My OH needs another car. Budget prob about £1500. She gets a lift to work most days, but sometimes has to drive. Probably 1 day a week. On those days she has a 100 mile round trip, all motorway miles. I know this is probably a completely wrong car for this, but what are MGFs like?
Cheers.

Well I could probably talk her into an mx5, I've never driven either, but I have read that the mx5 is generally recommended on here. In what ways are mx5s better than mgfs?. Serious question, neither car has ever really interested me, but I have the job of researching cars as she is female.
MGF or MGTF? Whichever is the best for the money. It appears the TF seems to be a better car, so probably one of those.

Thanks for all replies so far chaps. I should have clarified a bit more really. She is 5 foot tall so needs to be able to see over the steering wheel! Sportiness sadly isn't really much of a crunch point as she drives like a woman, ie slow. Rear wheel drive etc doesnt bother her, she used to drive my bmw 540i with no problems. She doesn't drive fast enough for it to be an issue.
Ideally she wants a bmw z4, but they're not in her budget, so that's why I thought I'd look at the cheaper end of the market but possibly still get something 2 seater and convertible. If not then I'll just get her a focus as its more sensible really, but they're not really very exciting cars.
She doesn't like mr2s after I crashed the one I used to drive with her in the passenger seat. She also doesnt want a clio. I know that mpg is one of her major considerations rather than sportiness, so I don't think the mx5 being better for powersliding round corners is really going to convince her, although personally it would go some way to persuading me.

Not in budget unfortunately. There might be the odd one scrapes through the net at 1500 but I don't want to get her something thats shagged. Otherwise that'd be ideal.

Thanks everyone. I'm not the sort to be put off cars that a lot perceive as being crap, I have had several alfas and currently drive a fiat coupe... Just want something that will do the job for her rather than break.

I like it. Mine is a turbo, it has been modified a bit although only no cosmetic modifications so it doesn't look different from standard, just various engine/suspension etc mods. Its not far off 300bhp. I find that it feels a tad heavy in comparison to some more flickable cars, but it goes well enough. The only thing that I don't like is that it doesn't really have any torque before the turbo is engaged, which is a bit of a pain when you just want to nip about round town. But I guess that's what older turbo cars are like. Ideally it'd have the instant pick up of my old alfa 33 twin carb, but with the mid range power that it has now and be 2-300kgs lighter smile

She doesn't want an e36 bmw or a saab 9-3. I've had a 323 before and a saab 9000 and we test drove a 9-3. As she's a bird, she wants something that looks nice and she thinks 2 seater convertibles look nice and doesn't like saloons. I've given up trying to tell her what she should or should have now as she usually doesn't like whatever I suggest, but this is a car that she likes that I probably wouldn't mind thrashing around on occasion too.
As usual budget has potentially crept up a little now, it looks like there are quite a few 40-50k examples around for the budget which is not too bad.

Hmm from a bit of a read a 160 mgtf looks pretty good. 160bhp in 1100kg and RWD. 0-60 in 6.9. Sounds pretty good on paper. Lots of 40-50k examples around, generally less than 2 grand. Of course she won't ever drive it quickly or ever even know its RWD but I'll be able to baz it round sometimes.
The mx5s I've seen for that sort of price are generally 1999 models, whereas you can get a 2004 mgtf for that, which do undeniably look a lot more modern. Which is all a woman is interested in really.
