I got busted at Bedford today with my "Extra Quiet" Silencer fitted. It measured 103Db(A) Static!! With a bit of effort, we managed to get on track and with some judicious lifting at the right place, never tripped the drive by meter, but 103 is ridiculous for an extra quiet silencer and I don't like the prospect of being sent home for being too noisy. I'm guessing that the silencer is knackered, but unlike proper stuff, it isn't repackable, so does anyone have any suggestions before I invest some hard earned cash with Radical?

take back my previous comment, my repacked one failed its noise test yesterday at 107.7 dBa at .50mtr, I borrowed one from Phil cooper this just about passed the static test at 105 but later in the afternoon I got black flagged at 106 on drive by.

Ive now took deliver from radical one of their track day silencers fitted it and this is showing 107 static with my own dba meter, so the question is the radical silencer fit for purpose or am i doing something wrong???
Unless the tester at Radical is profoundly deaf, I think the description of their "extra quiet" silencer is somewhat more than a little optomistic!

Has anyone had any success with the Muffler that Merlin sell?

I have used various levels of avoiding the truth, to claim anything up to about 8000 rpm being my rev limit, so have been tested at anything up to about 6000rpm.
I struggle to believe that free revving an engine can ever be a good thing to do, so revving it at nearly 8000 seems to lack mechanical sympathy. Maybe I need to get over myself and just get on with testing it at various different speeds!

That looks very impressive and the dB readings even more so. Since my year's budget has been blown on fixing a broken gear drive unit, I am going to be limited to track days only and need something that will pass the noise test at most circuits, so can you answer a couple of questions?

1. Does it have any significant effect on performance/engine breathing?
2. Will I need to sell my soul to get one?

Neil is only about 40 minutes away from me, so it looks like a great solution if it is reasonably affordable.

1. Didn't notice any drop in power. Neil has maintained the same bore throughout the silencer system. I guess the only true way to find out is to stick it on a dyno?
2. Nope - £350-ish

Where do you live? I'm in Bath if you wanted to have a further look at the finished 'zorst
£350 in the Radical World counts as almost free!!

I'm in South Glos - a few miles from Michael Wood Services on the M5 and it would be good to come and have a look at your system. I have messaged you my contact details.

Bedford should be do-able with mine now as I'm under 98dB and they work on <100dB static and 96db drive-by don't they?
And mine in a couple of weeks after a visit to Neil Handbury! Couldn't get the price down and the system for mine is going to cost me £450, but the difference is less than it's cost me in lost track time while I have messed about with add on silencers which didn't work, so all in all, I think it is money well spent. It will also avoid the necessity to lift passing the drive by meter at Bedford, which will make Bedford even more fun. Maybe see you there Adrian!

Since this topic has come back up, my story had an unhappy ending.
Neil Handbury made my exhaust and charged me £450. It looked good, but was actually no quieter than my Radical system. I took it back to Neil to be rebuilt and when I wanted to collect it, he had shut up shop and called in the Liquidators!
So, I had no exhaust, no £450 and the Liquiators told me my exhaust was nowhere to be found and my chances of getting anything back were somewhere between slim and zero. Longlife Exhausts were similarly useless and said it was nothing to do with them.
Moral of the story is, don’t ever trust Neil Handbury, because despite his very real welding skills, he is a bull***ting liar of the first order and if anyone knows him in or around the Taunton area, please don’t hesitate to tell him I said so!!
