So how does this work, i.e. I understand the long life service gives a service interval that is not a fixed amount of miles, but mine's gone off after 20,000 miles. Isn't this the 'normal' service interval? Is there a different kind of reset for long life, or is this to indicate something other than a full service needs doing?

All good interesting stuff, thanks. I do mainly long distance driving so my 19/20k is about right, however I've just had it (long life) serviced & checked the miles to go & it says 8500. How's that then? Does it take some time to give a more accurate reading or has something gone wrong, crap oil maybe? Or has the leading '1' digit failed?

Sounds as if the garage hasn't put the car back on the longlife service schedule when they reset service indicator?
Yes it does, & I've just realised that the indicator had gone off after 9/10k not 19/20k as I said previoulsy, so they obviously did the same before. I have an ELM327 OBD device, can I set it to long life myself?

Be assured I'll be ringing the garage up in the morning, yes it was an indy & it's a 2004 model 2.0 tdi. I guess if he can't reset it properly then I can pay for someone else to do it. Deep joy.

So assuming I manage to get it properly reset at some point, does it matter that I'm likely to have done 2 or 3k miles by that point? Does the 'quality sensor' look for absolute values, or a change since reset?

Change since last reset

or it wouldnt need reseting, it would know the oil was new.

The fact that you done 3k already means you will get a londer run to the next service light, could have it done bit early to be safe.
Ok fair enough, daft question maybe. I'm going to get it reset ASAP, 2/3k was a worst case scenario if I don't manage to get it done for a while, I do 200 miles a day & have probably done 850 since the service so should be ok hopefully, will be on the case tomorrow.
