Newbie poster

Just bought a 2011 A6 Avant.
The satnav doesn't work and constantly comes up with Please insert navigation medium.
I have what appear to be the original MMI nav dvd and language DVD/CDs.

Looking at other posts I'm not clear if I have a 3G DVD or HDD unit.
It's an early 2011 car, and in the glovebox are a MMI DVD unit with 2 SD card slots and a central SIM card slot. The MMI display is colour and the MMI control knob is without the joystick. There is also a multi CD changer.

Am I right in thinking a DVD unit will work off a nav disc, and the HDD unit will copy the contents of a nav disc and then work off the HDD.

The seller is away for a week (which I knew about in advance) so I can't ask them straight away.

2 possibilities;
I've been sold a dud,
or the DVD itself can't be read.

I've tried a CD cleaning disc in the drive to clean the laser.
When you insert a disc it is taken in and you can hear the disc spin up which I'm assuming is a good sign.

The nav disc appears to be genuine and in keeping with it's vintage it has a number of small scratches but they aren't deep. I tried sticking it in a (Wiindows) PC but that wouldn't read it either.
Should I be able to read the DVD and see some data i.e. an .iso file, or indeed anything ?

I'm hoping it's just the DVD has had it, if it is I can't really fault the dealer for supplying the original media which happens to be damaged, in line with it's age/condition.
If the drive itself has had it that's a different matter and how to take it up with the retailer is not the purpose of my post here or a matter for public consumption.

so to summarise the q's I'm looking for help with are :-
Have I got a 3G MMI DVD or HDD nav unit ?
Can I check if the DVD disc itself is stuffed or not by putting it in another device e.g. laptop or a DVD player ?
Am I right in understanding the difference between a DVD and HDD nav is where the map data is accessed from, presumably HDD is quicker etc ?

Any other suggestions / checks I can make ?
Can I use the SD slots in any way (assuming I can get a good DVD to work from) ?

Sorry trying to give as much useful info as I can in the OP, you can tell I'm not a tweeter.
Ta :-]

Thanks Steve, the SD slot(s) are empty. So what is the DVD used for then and how do I get the map data onto an SD card if the DVD doesn't do anything in the MMI drive and it doesn't do anything if you bung it in a PC, presumably I'd have to copy some data from the DVD out to an SD card reader ?
or are you just saying there's an option to use SD slot

To all posters ;
Dr G says in http://www.pistonheads.com/gassing/topic.asp?t=134... :-
"C6 A6 facelift 09-11
DVD navigation (MMI 3G) is standard except for the very first facelifted cars and bluetooth is standard. AMI (iPod) is a cost option.
HDD navigation (MMI 3G) is a cost option and includes a DVD player and hard drive juke box." <<<<<< **** fits what I got ****

Mine is early '11 and S-Line Special Edition trim so not sure on High v. Lo designation

Thanks Dr G. No part # on the box as just the DVD was in the drive, the language CD came in a cardboard sleeve tho.
The nav DVD says Europa ver 2011 Audi MMI Navigation (MMI 3G) and is copyright 2011. The disc looks genuine i.e. no shading on the surface when starting in the centre.
The part # is 4G0 919 884 J

small correction to earlier, no SIM slot in the head unit, I had just been rtfm-ing !

Can I test the drive by say putting in an audio CD ?

The nav DVD is readable in a dvd player but only comes up with the folder names, assume there is some copy protection or proprietary formatting going on.

audio CD plays mostly fine apart from skipping on one track so pointing towards not reading disc properly.

I ordered a replacement disc head mechanism from this company :-

www.opuradio.com
http://www.opuradio.com/products-detail.php?ProId=...

Shipping not cheap but it was couriered from the Far East and although I chose the more economical courier option they sent it DHL and it got here in 48 hrs (despatch took a few days).

Unfortunately it hasn't sorted the problem so either my nav discs are stuffed, or the electronics in the DVD head unit have had it - i.e. an audio CD now skips less but one track for example fails to play but put it in the CD changer and it is fine.

My next thoughts are either to transfer the DVD image to SD card and use that as the source, or buy new discs off the web - probably not the latest ones for easier compatibility etc.

Have read various things about activation codes, and even having to hook up to Audi's web portal to register firmware upgrades etc.

Anyone know how it works, what do I need to do ?

Quick update.
Seems that the original discs have become unusable over time (built-in obsolescence, nice blag Mr Audi to force an update ;] )
Have downloaded an image with activator for 2014/15 maps (from a6retrofit).There are now 2 map images, west and E. Europe.
I have loaded the Western Europe map (don't need E.) and tried the activator (twice).
The map db now shows in the Version info (with the stuffed DVD it was just blank) as EUW 5.20.4
but the navigation data is blocked after 5 mins which I gather means it's not registered.
My MMI software hasn't updated as part of the process as if you try to do an update from the Engineering menu (from the DVD) it goes through and registers the components but if you select Start it just hangs - the same if you then press Abort.
My MMI version remains at BNav_EU_K0206_2_D1.

Does MMI f-w have to be at K0257 to be compatible with the activation ?
Must I go through loading DVD 1 even if I'mnot interested in the map content ?

Have downloaded nav db EUW 5.20.4 from the links on the a6retrofit website.
The problem is the activator link he posts appears to be for 6.19.3 according to the metainfo file with it.

I have updated MMI f-w to K0257 and updated disc 1.
Previously I loaded disc 2 as I was only interested in W Europe.
That meant I was on a (locked) 5.20.4 map db.
Then I burnt disc 1 and just to show it was a good burn I put it in the car and it saw the update but as I wanted to update later I said No at the yes/no prompt. Ever since then it has refused to acknowledge there is an update on disc 1. I copied all the contents to an SD card and I could do the update from there.

I reapplied the activation and still no unlocked data (still convinced I have the wrong version).
I tried to re-apply the disc 2 update as I wanted to complete the sequence I have started -> MMI f-w, map disc1, then map disc 2 before final activation.
But the disc 2 update goes through, finds the update, registers the components but at the Start button stage it just sits there.

Any ideas, or do you know where I can get the activator for 5.20.4 EUW ?

I found the activator on the mega.nz file sharing site.
The Audi A5 oc website is a good ref for all this MMI stuff.

hi Haroonm121
not sure what it means about searching for satellite signals, it could be the satnav unit is goosed.
The please insert navigation data medium means it can't find the navigation database - not sure if this is the maps or gps data.
There is plenty of help on line if you want to take more of a DIY route.
If it was a private sale you might be stuck, if it was from a dealer and it was described as having satnav and you have just bought it I would be going back to the dealer and if they are unhelpful state you are willing to reject the car in writing due to a serious defect.
You could seek the diagnosis of an auto electrician / ICE specialist as there is no point spending cash on 'software' dvd/sd card if the h-w is kaput.
I take as there was no activator with the sd card this wasn't a dealer purchase. As always the internet is your friend - I found the mega.nz site useful but indexing not great.
Others will know more but the age of your car is different to mine so the media source could be different and the h-w version of NAV too, there was Hi and Lo (lo being phased out).
Activating is definitely a DIY capable job - I did it for mine, but you have to have the right key otherwise you are wasting your time. I tried one from the web that was supposed to match the media but didn't so you may have to try more than once.

If it's h-w I bought a replacement drive mechanism from these people which was fine -

Happy googling =]

Arnold Clark not known as Mr. Shark for nothing. (See the 'Ask a salesmen ... anything' thread on this site for their attitude to customers, by insiders)
Unfortunately you will have to play hard ball.
Check out honestjohn for consumer rights in rejecting, but you MUST give them the opportunity to rectify the fault first. Their month of warranty or whatever is irrelevant if your consumer rights have been breached.
Know your facts before going to them in a firm but fair way, the bottom line is if you are prepared to reject the car you should be able to, and the law is now on the buyer's side with the seller (dealer) having to prove that there was no pre-existing problem for up to 6 months following the sale.
Good luck - remember they will not be giving you a penny or lift a finger unless you make them, they have had your money (or the finance companies).
Have you made the finance company aware there is a serious problem with the car ?
I don't know if that helps as am no expert there.
