Audi A4 2003 Coolant level

Can someone please help...?

I've recently bought an Audi A4 Avant Sport 1.9tdi 2003 model. The car has only done 113k (17k since 2011!).

After driving it for a few days, I've noticed that the Engline Coolant level goes from half way (normal) up to just under the maximum. If i turn on the heaters (in this weather it's a nightmare!), the engine temperature reduces back to the normal half way point.

Now when buying the car, I did know that it's been serviced last in 2014 on 107k, but i don't know whether that would have any impact on this. It's at the garage now as i type this getting a service nonetheless.

I just want to know if the problem i have (engine coolant) is an easy fix as some forums i've read say that i just need a new thermostat, but some say it could be a radiator blockage so it needs to be replaced?

What could the issue be & and what sort of costs could i be faced with??

So would you suggest replacing the thermostat and engine coolant? I'm hoping that is a small fix like this but as you say, it is 14 years old!
