After 5 and a bit years of A6 Ownership, we've just traded it for a 3.0TDi Q5.

I normally run winter wheels and tyres and am wondering if anyone knows the smallest wheel I could fit to the Q5 so I can get wheels and tyres for the winter.

The ones fitted are the 20" wheels eek

Oh - and what size tyres would work with the smaller wheels?

Thanks in advance.

Q5 3.0tdis have fairly large, non branded 4 pot Brembo calipers so I'd guess 19's are the smallest wheels you'll get on them, possibly 18's but I doubt it with those brakes. If you look at the tyre label which will either be on the drivers door or fuel filler it will say what tyre sizes are correct. Correct tyre size would be 235/55 19.
Thanks

I'll have to investigate further.

I know that with our A6, the smallest wheels were 17" as it was the 3.0Tdi too.

So why didn't you put this in your thread title?

Instead of the wker speak.
Because I was trying to attract wkers to comment on it...

In reality, I asked around about Q5s over a year ago. And we've had them in our sights ever since. It's just a phrase. Get over it.

Depends what calipers they are.

They are either 18z or 17z.

18s will fit over 18z. (clue is in the name laugh)
Thanks for the sensible comment.

Do the calipers have this info stamped anywhere you can see without removing wheels?

(I'm also going to assume that my replacement A6 wheels (17") wouldn't fit if they had tyres to make them the correct rolling radius?)

See if you can find a part number on the back of the caliper.

Otherwise get a clear photo of your caliper and I'll tell you.

Ignore the tts.
Thanks for this. We don’t pick it up until Saturday, so i’ll do it then. It’s possible the dealer will know... but it’s second hand and while they’re an Audi specialist, they might not have that knowledge.

Here are the ‘best’ images from the dealer ad.

Any use?

I'm well aware that it's hardly going to be the most dynamic of vehicles, but my wife has a bad back and is struggling with getting in and out of the A6 so wanted a higher car.

I wanted an A6 Allroad Bi-Turbo. But she didn't.

So we compromised and got what she wanted.

In terms of the possible options we were looking at next none of them were particularly ‘exciting’

We’ve has several Audis and already decided that while S Line cars look better, they don’t ride as well as their BMW equivalent over the terrible roads where I live. So were already looking at an SE rather than S Line. We were also looking for something a little higher and I didn’t really want to go for a full-on 4x4 or soft roader and I would have preferred a Volvo Cross Country or an A4 or A6 Allroad. But ultimately, it will be my wife’s car as she drives it daily as I cycle to work.

Our car was a A6 Le Mans so it was 30mm lower than a normal S Line and I guess you could describe it as exciting when we got it home and discovered that it wouldn’t go on our drive as the drive had quite a severe pitch on it and the car grounded out.

It was exciting when it got stuck on the track to our friend’s house as it was so long and low it couldn’t get over the transition from the track to the paved bit.

So i’m Happy to take a little less excitement and swap it for a car that we can drive in comfort on the roads we use most often and can park outside our house.

And besides, i’ve not driven an Audi yet that I’d describe as exciting.

I’m excited about getting it though. Not had a 4x4 so am looking forward to a different experience.

Thanks to all who provided useful information. And to those who were happy to sling the insults, i’m old enough, fat enough and ugly enough to have heard far worse.

And yes the ‘pull the trigger’ phrase was a bit wky in fairness. 😘

My friend was looking at these but ended up getting an ex demo 240bhp Tiguan with all the trimming it’s very nice and pretty fast!
This is also the 240 bhp version.

The facts and figures quote it as a 0-60 of 6.5 seconds, which I'd be surprised at given our A6 was just shy of 240bhp and those figures were 8.5 seconds.

Not that 0-60 makes a blind bit of difference in the real world

I’ve been a fan of Audis for years.

I prefer the looks and styling of them to pretty much anything else.

I’ve been tempted by the Volvos (XC60 and V90 in particular) and had a BMW previously that was a better drive but the car was a nightmare from about 10 minutes after we picked it up right until the point we sold it 5 Years later. And during all that time BMW were awful in dealing with faults. So we’ve ruled them out.

Didn’t really fancy anything from Japan or korea.

I could have gone for a Skoda, but my missus is a badge snob.

Can someone point me in the right direction please?

Actually, having said that above, my missus did have a Kia Sportage as a hire car and said she really liked it. But they're not as cheap as you'd think and someone I know has just got one and one of our friends said they couldn't have one as they can only ever hear the name as if it's being said out loud by 'Boycey' from Only fools and horses and that put them off it entirely. And then me too. Sometimes it's the smallest things.

"Alright Derek, just got the old Sporta-a-a-a-a-ge outside."

Well we picked it up yesterday, and now I've driven it properly, I'm impressed.

Seat of the pants, it feels quicker than our old A6. I've not looked at relative weights or gearing, but it picks up pretty quickly.

It's comfy too.

Excited? Still not sure that's the correct word, but may be 'contented' is.

I guess this comes down to this being a rational purchase that feels like it ticks many boxes.

It feels like it will be comfy for long journeys - Christmas often sees us doing over 1,000 miles as we live in High Wycombe and my parents are in Northumberland, and my wife's are in North Devon. The boot is shorter but deeper than the A6, So I'm not sure how that will affect the arrangement of luggage yet, but I think it's going to be big enough. If it isn't, I'm going to struggle to get the roof box on there I think.

And finally, I do think it's a handsome looking car. I agree that it will probably blend in to the sea of grey/silver cars in a way that a Misano Red A6 didn't.

Overall, I like it.

Thanks for all the help - especially Dr G. And even the negative comments were a help in a way as they force you to truly assess what you like about the car - not that I have to justify it to anyone.

Unlikely at best. I'd like to think I've never used the word 'hooned' to describe my driving style.

I'm not much of an organiser, more of a 'you organise it, and I'll turn up...' type of person
