Folks,

I'll soon be in the market for a standard 5-door VW Golf Gti Mk5 DSG, coming from a variety of Porsches but heard that this car is superb.

Value and appreciate your opinions which is why I'm posting.

Pricewise, they seem to vary from £5k to 12k depending on mileage and spec.

I wondered what your views were on mileage and price and are there any specific things that should have been done or are likely to cost a lot in the future - ie DSG Service, cam belt etc that I need to look out for.

The Porsches I had always kicked me in the wallet at service time and I can't afford to go there again, hence the change.

Any pointers towards a nice car will be greatly appreciated. Must be DSG, 5-door, standard spec and preferably with 17" wheels.

Many thanks

That's incredibly helpful, thanks very much. I really appreciate the effort spent providing those links.

I had no idea there was even a Mk5 dedicated forum!

Mine was a Cayman 2.7 so I don' think there will be that much difference in performance. Not that I drove it that fast anyway.

Any thoughts on this GTi anyone? All appreciated.

Thanks,

Re the leather I must admit every picture I've seen of GTi leather interiors look tired and very thin leather, so thanks for that tip.

Re the Edition 30, my son will be on the insurance which is enough already, so we probably couldn't get quoted for that, also the prices seem a lot higher for that model.

Re the Xenons - thanks.

Seems like everything for sale is Up North as well. I'm surprised many dealers expect you to buy the car unseen over the phone and for a charge they will deliver it to you.

I've never bought a car like that.

Thanks, but I wouldn't know how loud the whistling should be?

"They all do that, sir"

Any advice on mileage?

Lowish mileage car (70,000) that's had nothing done to it or higher mileage (100+) with the bits done?

Have been on the GTi forum and there seems to be lots of upgrades (non performance) that members have done.

Looks expensive. I paid less than that 4-years ago for mine, which was also a 2006 55-plate 5dr DSG with just under 100k miles.

I would agree about the comments on leather. The tartan effect Cloth seats are really nice and don't seem to wear out very easily
Yes maybe, but very few cars around for sale.

Anyone selling?

The search continues but I'm slowly losing the will.

I've been in touch with a few dealers, mostly who never phone back or respond to emails. I've decided they don't like people who ask difficult questions like "what size wheels are on the car' and "does it have full service history". Gawd knows how any of them expect to sell their stock with their couldn't care less attitudes.

Anyhoo, I've found this one which has all the right spec apart from a set of wheels and coilovers that I'm not particularly keen on, considering my terrible local roads.

For sale by a dealer and priced at £5250 which seems reasonable compared to what else is on offer. Has been for sale for a while, 80k, DSG.

Would it be easy to get rid of those wheels and coilovers and put it back to standard spec? I believe the shocks are adjustable so maybe the ride height could be improved.

Anyone know the dealer or the car?

Any thoughts - bearing in mind the distinct lack of standard Red Mk5 DSG Gti's with reasonable mileage.

cheers.

Bumper fixings - I don't know, never seen ones like that before.

I haven't actually seen the car yet, just wanted some opinions before making the journey. In an ideal world I wouldn't buy a modded car, but if it's just a matter of restoring the original shocks and wheels then it may not be too bad.

The sun's out, I haven't got a car and patience alas, is not one of my virtues.
