Any views on preemptive gearbox oil change for a 120,000mile V10 S6. No sign of any issues with the 'box, apart from occasional shunt when shifting into reverse when cold.

I can't find any evidence of the oil having been changed in the past from the service record, and IIRC ZF guidance was 60-80k for oil change.

Any advice ?

c£500 seems to be the quote for an oil & filter change with c £300 of that being the charge for the oil

Another S6 owner!

Had mine done not long back by the Phirm in Camberley. Total figures look about right although I paid £21.73/litre for the fluid (they reckon you can only do 7-8 litres in one go). They had some difficulty on a couple of the nuts/bolts on the gearbox pan so ended up having to drill out and helicoil but other than that all good. Make sure they replace the strainer too.

I'd use someone who's done it before as refilling has to be done at set temperatures and all sorts of jazz.

Apparently my oil was very contaminated. Shifting is now imperceptible aside from an occasional shunt when cold from 1st to 2nd. Mine was on 90k when done.

Good luck and it's definitely worth doing!
Thanks, I'm just south of Godalming, so they're quite close I'll drop them an email.

They are not the cheapest - but I can't fault their knowledge and work. They've looked after mine for 2 years now and I wouldn't take it anywhere else. Always some lovely metal to look at while your there too. Some of their builds are great!
Well £21/litre is a few quid cheaper than my last quote, so they can't be that expensive smile

£800 (Phirm) vs £580 , but the Phirm include removing&refitting the down pipes which the other place hasn't. I'll check another Audi place I've used in Guildford to get their view.

Maybe they've had to add some extra time after doing mine

The pipes had to be removed to drop the pan and change the strainer. It also has magnets on it to catch any metal particles and needs to be removed so this can be cleaned off. Fair old jump in cost though...
Doh! they're £700 not £800, the difference is just the labour to drop the pipes and a few minor exhaust bits (gasket/bolts etc) - box stuff is the same, down to exact price pr litre for oil
