When I last did one of these, about 20 years ago I seem to remember a little rubber oil seal that you prised out and replaced. The box I have now has a (stainless?) steel bush or washer or a seal with this backing to it. Do these leak the same, replace the same way and how do you get it out?
Think I'm making progress......

There was oil everywhere when I got the engine/box so no idea whether it was leaking from this or not. Just assumed after previous efforts with minis in the 80's.
May leave this in and see, just seemed like a good idea to change it whilst the box was out.
It could be an alloy washer rather than SS, can't see how you would get it out without serious damage to gearbox case!
Main oil was probably from the cracked oil filter housing!
Hhhmmmmmm!

But how do you get the old one out?
The steel/ali "washer" is set into the recess.

Looked at this before starting and the design is good but there was oil seeping past the ali washer so started....got the washer out eventually, is is nicely made with an O ring sealer around the outside. The rubber seal is well into the box, frightened to probe too hard as I am worried about it going into the box.
The old trick was two seals, poking the old one to this position and adding a new one but I also remember the seal into the box problem. Any comments?
Been talking to the guy at the Mini Place in Sunderland, apparently mine has been fitted incorrectly and the ali washer goes in first followed by the rubber seal.
Problem is, the hole that they fit is stepped and it would appear as if the ali washer only goes in flush with no room for the seal.
Curiouser & Curiouser.
