Body to chassis shock absorber? Eh??

I was having a poke around in preparation to fitting the tow bar when I saw the nearside rear above said item not attached. The bolt was absent and as such the shock absorber dangling. Now, I've not really noticed any body roll. I've got another one I'll whip on tomorrow but do they actually do much?
Just wondering really!!
