I put in an order for a new discovery around 6 months ago, which after various delays was due to arrive on the 12th of November. I have just been told that my order has been ‘unslotted’ by the factory and JLR now can’t give me any indication of when I will receive my car. In classic JLR fashion the dealer is being fairly unhelpful and has suggested I could cancel the order.

Basically they are blaming everything on chip shortages. However that doesnt make me feel any better about losing my place in line! My concern is I might keep hanging on and they cancel the order all together.

Has any one else experienced this and was there light at the end of the tunnel?

I’m currently on the fence about keeping the order in and hoping to one day receive my car, or just cancelling it and running my xc90 for a bit longer.

Did you get any discount from the dealer?

If so, they probably are hoping you cancel as they'll now be able to sell you slot at full retail if you do.
This is what I’m suspecting is the issue. It’s an S model and I bought it though the BASC discount scheme, so it’s probably very low priory as far as they are concerned.

Reading on other forums JLR have been prioritising the high end high margin models for build.

So frustrating as it’s not like it can just walk into a different manufacture and get something else quickly at the moment.

I spoke to the dealer again today and got pretty much the same response. They claim I was only unslotted on Friday, the same day I chased them on my order, seems too coincidental but they’re sticking to their company line. Unsurprisingly they said our discounts had nothing to do with it.

We’re pretty much stuck between a rock and hard pace and they know it.

I’ve decided just to stick it out for lack of another option.

I received an update from LR this week just to be told that there was no update. Basically we are expected to wait patiently or cancel our order.

My wife enquired about a new disco sport this week to replace her car when it goes back and was told they’re not taking any new DS orders at the moment. Maybe they’re trying to clear the backlogs first…

Our dealer is less confidant and is refusing to speculate on dates. Yeah I’m sticking it out too, cancelling will only lead to me getting a poor deal on a car a I don’t really want.

More news from Land Rover.

Apparently my order will now be made as an MY23 spec and given priority for build once they start production. They also confirm my price won’t change for the MY23 version (how generous!). Not sure if there is much of a spec change as I don’t have a copy of the current discovery spec sheet, however I’m pretty sure terrain response 2 was standard before which isn’t now.

Still no build date but I’m told to expect March at the earliest as they should start to build early next year.

Terrain Response 2 hasn’t been standard spec for a while. I don’t think even the twin-speed transfer box has been standard for a while. Intelligent fold rear seats also now an option rather than standard.

Edit: Just to add as well; I read somewhere (can’t remember where) that if you don’t spec the D5 with the twin speed box it’s now no longer permanent 4x4 and works in the same way AWD cars do. So possibly 90/10 split torque rear / front. Don’t hold me to it as I could be wrong, but the D5 is no longer a serious off-roader as standard, it’s a school run family car.

I knew it didn’t come with the high low box, but for some reason in my head it still head terrain response. I could be wrong though. I did think about the high low box for reversing the trailer, however in the end i didn’t bother since I’ve managed without for the last few years.

If you do find that article about the awd/4x4 thing please share it. I’ve done a search but came up blank.

In reality the disco is never going to do any serious off roading, just driving across fields which even my xc90 can manage. If I wanted a serious off roader I wouldn’t be spending £50k on it, I would buy something old and scrappy. Having done a lot of off roading over the years I know how damaged the trucks end up getting.

Interesting, I wonder if this is something LR have changed on the quiet. Looking on their site they now describe all discovery’s as AWD. However they also have the same description on the defender page, so maybe they are just using the terminology interchangeably as 99% of people won’t notice the difference.

‘When driving across low-traction surfaces such as ice and snow, torque can be balanced between the front and rear wheels, providing greater stability and control.’

The reliability and terrible LR service has always been a worry to us, however there are just so few ‘SUVs’ that do everything as well as a discovery (when it works). the xc90 has been ok but is no where near as refined as the new disco. Fingers crossed we don’t end up with another duff one…

Well three months on and I’ve had no further news on a new build date.

Anyone else having any luck getting their order fulfilled?

Well I’m pleased to report that it finally arrived last week and it was worth the wait! Honestly it’s the best car I’ve ever owned and it trumps my previous xc90 by a country mile.

Other than only coming with one key I haven’t noticed any missing tech. I was also pleased to discover it came with radar cruise control which I wasn’t expecting (I probably hadn’t spotted it in the spec sheet).
