We have a page on our parenting blog which ranks quite highly on google. It is about pretty niche, but gets +25,000 visitors per year. It is about a specific type of musical instrument, and they're not cheap. I am wondering how I can wangle a commission from even 1% of the visitors, as it would be a nice little earner (every little helps and all that). The average time spent reading the page is just under 6 mins, so people do read it.

The problem is that the rest of our site has nothing to do with musical instruments, it's a parenting blog. We just thought it would be interesting advice for families looking at this specific type of instrument. At the moment, all the site revenue comes from up front sponsors but we don't really monetise posts unless they're advertorials paid in advance.

How is it best to get into monetising posts, rather than just selling advertising? Am I likely to make anything out of that number of hits? How do you get the best commissions etc?

You could try Google AdSense. Revenue will depend on many factors but very approximately £10 per 10k visitors is a reasonable target.
Yes that isn't what I am looking for.

What are you looking for?

Another route would be to use affiliate links, if people are looking to make a purchasing decision and using your site for research this could work well. Is the item sold on any of the big retailers, e.g. Amazon?
Yes I’ve looked at those types of thing. I’m not sure it’s expert enough. I guess I could at least get the amazon cookie associated with my account if they click through. Problem is, that the instruments referenced in the post are between £500 and unlimited. I’m not sure if it’s better to talk to a music shop who does worldwide postage offer and then sell them sponsorship of the page than buggering about with commission from links.

It would depend on the value of the item - if it's niche enough for the numbers to be attractive a specific shop may be interested in setting up a special introducer's agreement and paying a commission per referral or per sale.

Maybe find a decent retailer and ask them directly.

I don’t want to wee on anyone’s wheatabix but 25000 visits a year will get you sweeties. Get to 25M and then ask again
I would agree on an iPhone cable but these are people looking for advice about musical instruments which are niche and expensive.

I think you have had your answer above in what you posted...
get a music shop to advertise, work out what is throw away money and then charge them that per month, eg £30 per month is a nice £360 p/a for you, and ignore the comments about needing 50 billion visitors, if you have 25,000 a year, they are probably a high % of relevant people, and you only need < 0.1% to be interested in purchasing from the music shop to send them 2 new customers a month, very good figures for a niche...

and you absolutely can make money from passive niches, I do so through affiliate links...
I think that is what it will come down to!
