What causes YLOD?

What causes the YLOD on fat PS3's? I currently have a 40gb one and have (so far) had no problems with it and am considering putting a big hard drive in it. Does the HD cause the YLOD or is it something else?
Basically, should I put a 500gb HD in my old fat PS3 or buy a slim with small memory and upgrade from new?

The flashing yellow light of death is mostly caused by the soldering of the processors breaking down over many heat cycles.
Make sure the fans and vents of the PS3 are kept clear of dust build up can help prevent overheating and speeding up of the process.
It can be 'fixed' by reflowing the solder but it's usually only a temporary solution (I've done a few before on several PS3's).
The HDD has nothing to with the YLOD.
If you suspect the HDD is giving you problems then try unplugging it and reinserting.
Then try a back up, reformat and reinstall via the service menu.
Go ahead and upgrade if there is nothing wrong with the machine, my old launch day 60Gb is still running fine with an upgraded HDD.
