We are now starting final prep to move to our new house.
I am going to go with BT for the broadband. There is FTTC.

The master socket is in the hall way next to the front door.
Ideally I want the home hub in the office...
However the office is on the third floor...

I have no knowledge of infinity of FTTC as I have never had it before.

I am just finishing with cables now so I can in theory run any kind of cable from the master to the office - but what will BT want / allow?

TIA!

When I place the order can I spec modem only and no router? I have a decent router already and a decent switch also..

If this is the case then I am more than happy to get a CAT6 from the office to the hall way and surface mount the modem.

So plan now is buy a modem via the bay then have an RJ45 ready next to the master which will then plug directly into my existing TPLINK router.

If anyone sees a problem with that plan do shout before I spend tonight crawling round in the loft and what not..!!

Update:
So the plan is run the data extension from the master to the office. All sorted and ordered with BT.
Now they are saying there is a problem and they cant find the port for the line on the DSLAM.
The only way to fix it is to install the line and *then* find the port.... all sounds very odd to me!
So I will get landline next week but no BB until "some time after".
I *really* don't want to get into a position where I have signed up for a service I cant get but they say I signed for the land line too.. IYSWIM.

We have to get service first... which is not happening at present! I often heard stories about the hassle people have getting infinity installed and it seems I am one of the unlucky ones. No one turned up yesterday, no e-mail or update from BT. I tried the online chat 4 or 5 times during the day and in the end my laptop battery went flat...

Phoned last night to speak to a chap in India who reckons there is a problem (no st) and they will have it on today... I some how doubt that but will wait and see. After today I guess I am looking at next week due to weekend.

I can appreciate problems with a new line I guess but this is an existing house and the previous owners had infinity!
I am not holding my breath for today..

The online help is not the best, get through to someone after 5 mins they say they need to send me to orders and then I get "searching for an available agent" until the end of time. Tried 4 or 5 times now.

Well this is not going well.
Meant to be connected on Thursday.
Nothing, no contact. 6 or 7 calls later to BT and finally they come up with I can only get 512kb/sec...
I know there is FTTC at my cabinet and I know that the people who had the house before us had a fast connection.
WTF.

I asked to make a complaint but told it was a 30 min wait. What a joke BT have turned into!

Well I found the problem. Shame BT did not have the b@lls to tell me this on the phone:

Telephone Number *************** on Exchange PENDLETON is served by Cabinet ***
FTTC Range A (Clean) 80 73 20 20 -- Waiting list
FTTC Range B (Impacted) 80 54 20 17 -- Waiting list
This PCP has a waiters list for FTTC services. You may place an order which will be dealt with in turn.
FTTC is currently not available on this cabinet due to following reasons:- Sorry your cabinet is temporarily unavailable, capacity will be restored as soon as possible.

Well just an update. Managed to speak to someone in the UK. Well over a week since I was meant to get service.
Anyways, basically yes the cabinet is full and the only thing they can advise I can do is check their website daily to see if any capacity has come free.
In the mean time they can offer me 512kb/sec... wonderful.

Our old house gets c.1.5mb/sec (on a good day) and one of the reasons we went for this new house is because it was so close to the BT cabinet which has FTTC (cable run is 170m). Sods law I guess that we thought we would get a faster service and we ended up getting slower, we even said it cant possibly be any slower... turns out it can be!!

I am not even on ADSL yet! As they can only give me 512kb/sec its not worth getting into a 12 month contract for that. Wifi over Satcoms is faster!
