I'm in the process of ditching Virgin Media and looking at alternatives. We only have the basic TV package and I was wondering if a decent Humax box is still the recommended option for recording boxes?

I suppose the question is, how do they compare the the newer V6 box they released? That's what we have now.

I've got a Freesat Humax HD box bought about 3 years ago, its not great, menus are slow etc. Had to have remote replaced twice.

I usually just use my FireTV box and use catchup these days.
It would be running through a Smart TV so plenty of catch up option son there. More for recording films really.

I'm going to ring Virgin back tonight and attempt to "dominate the stairs" with them. If it gets down to 36-38 quid a month, I'll be happy. Then it's evenings and weekends. 200Mb broadband, basic TV with V6 box.

Correct. But then I guess if you have a rubbish internet connection it makes sense.
A decent internet connection doesn't make the film that you forgot to record last night appear on catch up. I've got just over 200meg broadband and that can't make them magically appear!

Streaming is great, but it's nice to be able to get the other stuff that isn't on there.
