2011 E350 Cdi - Oil cooler problem

I believe this is a common problem.
Friend's car has 60k on the clock, bought AUC maybe 3 years ago with FMBSH.
Oil leak so went to dealer. Diagnosed as oil cooler needing replacing. (From a brief look around online, it sounds like the seals may actually be the issue).
Either way they are quoting a large sum for the fix and saying MB won't contribute.
Given it's a common problem, should he be pushing harder with MB for good will?
